Glauber's salt: formula, properties, use and contraindications

In those moments when people forget about the rules of nutrition and gain a certain amount of extra pounds on this occasion, it can be offensive and bitter. We all want to be attractive. And a normal figure is one of the building blocks on which attractiveness is built for others and for oneself. Diets and avoiding spicy and salty foods come to the rescue. However, salt alone is often used to quickly lose extra pounds. Intrigued? This substance is none other than Glauber's salt.

Glauber's discovery

Johann Rudolf Glauber, who discovered such a wonderful substance for the people, was a German alchemist. This happened at not the easiest moment of his life. One day the scientist fell ill and could not eat at all - he was tormented by intestinal spasms and accompanying phenomena. Johann was advised to take a piece of bread and go to a wonderful spring. Residents of the town claimed that if bread was soaked in that magical water, a person would be healed and begin to eat. Not too hopeful for a miracle, the alchemist nevertheless visited the water source and did everything as he was told. After the bread meal, he drank the same water and, to his surprise, felt better. As a scientist, Glauber began to consider the composition of the liquid. For several months he carried out chemical tests, and in the process of evaporating water from the source, crystals of an unknown salt type were discovered.

However, there were still several years left before the fateful discovery. Years later, while studying salt, Glauber conducted experiments and was surprised to discover that some of the resulting crystals had the formula of the salt that saved the scientist’s life. The substance was called the “wonderful salt” - mirabilite. This salt is found in some Siberian lakes, in the sea waters of the Czech Republic, in California, Germany, and on the island of Sicily.

Where is it used?

To evaluate the versatility of sodium sulfate and its versatility in terms of application, we list the sectors of its active use:

  1. Food production. Here salt is used as an additive E514 to give the product a uniform consistency and regulate acidity.
  2. Glass production and textile industry.
  3. Household chemicals where salt is present in washing powders.
  4. Veterinary medicine. In this industry, salt is used similarly to medicine, due to its laxative qualities for the treatment of constipation, bloating in animals - horses, cattle and small cattle, dogs and cats, birds. It also removes toxins in case of mercury or lead poisoning, and in small dosages improves appetite and digestion in animals, cleanses wounds, relieves swelling and inflammation.
  5. Medicine. Mirabilite is present in drugs used to treat constipation, hemorrhoids, and hypertensive crisis. It also cleanses the digestive tract in case of poisoning with substances such as mercury and copper, lead and other metal salts.

How it works?

The formula of Glauber's salt is such that this substance draws upon itself the fluid in the body. Once in the intestines, such salt naturally attracts water and thins the stool. In turn, the work of the intestines is enhanced, and the masses are soon evacuated from the human body. Together with fecal matter, Glauber's salt can relieve the body of four liters of fluid. Toxic elements and putrefactive bacteria that have left the human body also facilitate the work of the lymphatic system. Lymph is cleansed thanks to mirabilite, and the body heals. Glauber's salt crystals dissolved in water also “carry away” toxic salts of some metals (mercury, lead, copper, barium). Due to the large volumes of lost fluid, the solution is used during weight loss. Liquid has weight, so by removing it, a person gets rid of kilograms.

Action

Benefit for health:

  • helps with constipation;
  • improves digestion;
  • normalizes metabolism;
  • stimulates bile formation;
  • relieves symptoms of poisoning;
  • blocks toxic substances that enter the gastrointestinal tract along with food and prevents them from being absorbed into the blood.

The main indications for the use of Glauber's salt in Soviet medicine are constipation and severe forms of poisoning.

Weight loss effect:

  • activates intestinal peristalsis, providing a laxative effect;
  • this frees the gastrointestinal tract from stagnant feces;
  • binds to toxic substances in the stomach and removes them from the body;
  • improves lymph flow;
  • eliminates excess fluid, having diuretic properties (not as powerful as laxatives);
  • cleanses the body.

Mirabilite promotes weight loss by removing feces, toxins, waste and other debris, as well as excess fluid. However, fat deposits do not disappear anywhere.

This is interesting. Paustovsky’s story “Kara-Bugaz” tells about the extraction of Glauber’s salt in Turkmenistan. After its publication, colleagues began to call the writer “the mirabilite of our literature.”

Glauber's salt: instructions

If you decide to get rid of toxins and several kilograms of weight, and you came up with the idea of doing this with the help of mirabilite, first consult with a medical specialist. If there is no ban on taking this salt, we begin cleansing from the inside.

Cleansing with Glauber's salt is for a purposeful and resilient person. The course of salt intake lasts three days. During the mentioned period of time, complete abstinence from food is necessary. Food these days will be replaced by assorted juices. These drinks should not be from a store. So you will have to squeeze the juices yourself. Make a serving of juice from the following citrus fruits every day:

  • lemon - about two pieces;
  • oranges - four pieces;
  • grapefruits - three or four pieces.

For two liters of the resulting juice, add the same amount of pure water without gas.

You need to prepare a solution for the cleansing procedure as follows: pour a tablespoon of mirabilite into two hundred milliliters of heated boiled water and dissolve.

Restrictions on the use of the mineral

Glauber's salt is universal; its use for people helps to cleanse the entire length of the intestines, remove harmful accumulations from the lymph and get rid of edema. But the use of Glauber's salt is not recommended if the following diseases are diagnosed:

  • Weakened state with signs of exhaustion.
  • Insufficiency of the cardiovascular system.
  • Persistent decrease in blood pressure.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Breastfeeding period.
  • Critical days for women.
  • Signs of acute appendicitis or cholecystitis.
  • Acute stage of the inflammatory process.
  • Ulcerative lesions of the stomach and intestines.

If you are interested in a cleansing method that uses Glauber's salt, be sure to consult a doctor before use to avoid trouble. You can adjust your weight by removing excess fluid. It is possible to achieve a weight loss of 3-5 kg. only by cleansing the intestines and removing swelling. Since all fat reserves remain in place, most often losing weight with the help of mirabilite is a preliminary stage before introducing an extended diet for weight loss.

Those who have already used the method of losing weight with Glauber's salt recommend strictly following the instructions for use and starting the procedure on a day off in order to devote all their free time to their health. Due to the threat of dehydration, it is necessary to restore the water-salt balance, not forgetting to drink diluted citrus juices.

It is prohibited to abuse regular cleansing of this kind, because in case of an overdose, vomiting, persistent diarrhea, and excessive urination may occur, which will inevitably lead to an imbalance in the electrolyte balance, and then you can restore your health only in a hospital setting.

The purge has begun

In the morning, drink a glass of solution on an empty stomach. After thirty minutes, consume the freshly prepared juice solution. It is necessary to repeat the intake of citrus juice with water every half hour. The laxative effect will be very pronounced, so do not forget to drink the prepared mixture of water and juice. This technique will save you from possible dehydration. Remember: dehydration is life-threatening!

If you cannot withstand a three-day fast, then eat a few tangerines or a couple of oranges. Or indulge yourself in grapefruit. This is all you can eat for three days. Completely remove teas, buns and other foods from your diet.

On a note:

  • If you are constantly thirsty and need to extend your juice drink until the evening, drink plain clean water.
  • Do not abuse this method of cleansing and weight loss. This is a rigorous procedure and may only need to be applied once a year.
  • If nausea, weakness or chills appear, stop all cleansing. And if suddenly there is a rise in temperature or other dangerous situations, call a doctor.

After a three-day fast and saline cleanse, begin introducing food on the fourth day. For breakfast, treat yourself to porridge cooked in water. Make lunch with chicken broth. From the fifth day, carefully introduce normal food into the diet.

Application

The independent use of Glauber's salt as a laxative for weight loss is problematic because the instructions for the drug are prescribed for animals. In it you will find dosages for horses, cattle, deer, sheep, etc. All this is not relevant for humans. Therefore, you have to use the drug in accordance with the recommendations given by people who have managed to lose weight with its help.

Firstly, from them you can learn recipes for weight loss using Glauber’s salt. Here are some examples of the most common and effective ones (judging by the reviews). Everything must be prepared anew each time and consumed fresh.

Solution

Dissolve 1 tbsp. l. Glauber's salt in 200 ml of boiling water cooled to room temperature.

Fruit juice

You will need fresh citrus fruits: 2 lemons, 3 oranges and 4 grapefruits. They need to be put through a juicer. The result should be 2 liters of concentrated juice. If this volume does not come out of the specified amount of fruit, add another orange. After this, the juice must be diluted with boiling water cooled to room temperature in equal proportions (i.e. 2 liters). This will give you the daily dosage.

Enema

Add juice squeezed from one lemon to 2 liters of boiling water cooled to room temperature.

The weight loss course should last no more than 3 days so as not to cause harm to health. Suggested scheme:

  1. In the morning on an empty stomach at the same time, drink a glass of Glauber's salt solution.
  2. Half an hour later - a glass of juice.
  3. Then during the day you are allowed to drink only juice in small portions.
  4. In case of severe thirst, you are allowed to drink regular water, but only in exceptional situations.
  5. No solid food or drinks.
  6. Do a lemon enema at the same time before going to bed.

This scheme is clear evidence that the use of Glauber's salt is a fairly tough way to lose weight. You should exit this detox program carefully and gradually:

  • on the 4th day for breakfast - 100 g of oatmeal with water, for lunch - 200 ml of low-fat chicken broth;
  • starting from the 5th day, dairy-free cereals, low-fat soups, fresh fruits and vegetables are introduced in small quantities;
  • then adhere to a balanced diet for 2-3 weeks.

The result is a possible loss of 3-4 kg in these 3 days, but everything is determined individually. As they gradually exit the detox program, some people lose a couple more pounds.

You can repeat this extreme method of losing weight no more than once a year. Those who have used it in practice know why it is so rare. You will feel better during these 3 days. Not everyone can withstand what happens to the body at this time.

There are experiences of less extreme weight loss with Glauber's salt. For example, without juice therapy and enemas, adhering to a regular low-calorie diet. But the results are too insignificant, but there are no less side effects.

Negative aspects of using sodium sulfate

In addition to the good points, the product also has some negative points:

  • Dehydration. A lot has been said about this, but we will repeat it again. Dehydration is dangerous and bad.
  • Urge to vomit.
  • Removal of necessary substances from the body along with toxins.
  • When using salt to lose weight, remember: fat will not go away during cleansing of the body. Only water leaves.

Cases in which the use of Glauber's salt for humans is contraindicated

The substance can aggravate the course of some diseases. People with chronic health problems should beware of any self-medication and self-purification. It must be remembered that before any intervention in the measured course of life of the body, you should first visit a doctor. The case of Glauber's salt is no exception. After consulting with your doctor and undergoing the necessary laboratory tests, you will find out whether something similar can be used for you.

Other reasons prohibiting taking the solution:

  • Pregnant women are contraindicated in any self-medication. It is prohibited to apply salt to the body at this time.
  • Women breastfeeding a child are required to refuse this procedure. Do not forget that the baby, along with the milk, will receive something that is dangerous for him.
  • Hypotonic and exhausted people should not take the solution.
  • Elderly people should be wise and take care of themselves.
  • Any diseases associated with the gastrointestinal tract are a reason for refusing to take mirabilite solution.

Glauber's salt is sold mainly through veterinary institutions. For animals, this salt is a beneficial substance. It is given to increase the appetite of farm livestock. Directions for use and dosage - directly on the packaging or in the accompanying instructions.

Sodium sulfate (sodium sulfate)

Sodium sulfate

or
sodium sulfate
, or
sodium sulfate
(eng.
sodium sulfate
) is the general name for sodium salts of sulfuric acid. Previously, Glauber's salt, which is a decahydrate of sodium sulfate, was widely used in medicine as a laxative. Currently, sodium sulfate and its hydrates, including Glauber's salt, as the only active ingredient are not approved for medical use either in Russia or in the USA.

Sodium sulfate is a chemical substance

The chemical formula of anhydrous sodium sulfate (lat. sodium sulphate anhydrous
) is Na2SO4. It appears as colorless crystals and is stable at temperatures below 32.4 °C. Above this temperature and in the presence of water, anhydrous sodium sulfate is converted to sodium sulfate decahydrate Na2SO4·10H2O, also called Glauber's salt. The molar mass of anhydrous sodium sulfate is 142 g/mol. Sodium hydrogen phosphate is an acid salt of sodium and sulfuric acid - NaHSO4, crystalline hydrate of sodium hydrogen sulfate - NaHSO4 H2O.

Sodium sulfate in medicine

Sodium salts of sulfuric acid are used or have been used in medicine as laxatives, antacids and mineral-vitamin complexes. According to ATC, sodium sulfate has the following codes:

  • in the section “A06 Laxatives”, group “A06AD Osmotic laxatives” - code A06AD13
  • in the section “A12 Mineral supplements” - code A12CA02

Sodium sulfates are included in medications as excipients. An example is Fortrans.

Sodium sulfate - laxative

The laxative effect of sodium sulfate is based on the increase and retention of fluid in the intestines due to osmotic processes.
The accumulation of fluid in the colon leads to increased peristalsis and bowel movements. In the United States, laxative medications are approved for use, intended to cleanse the intestines before colonoscopy and containing sodium sulfate among the active ingredients. One of these drugs is Suprep (active ingredients: sodium sulfate, potassium sulfate and magnesium sulfate). The illustration below provides detailed instructions (in English):

A domestic laxative containing anhydrous sodium sulfate is Lavacol.

Sodium sulfate - antacid

Sodium sulfate (together with sodium bicarbonate and sodium phosphate) is part of the Bourget mixture, which was widespread in the past and now has only historical significance.
Sodium sulfate is a so-called absorbable antacid. A positive characteristic of absorbed antacids is the speed of onset of the acid-neutralizing effect. The negative properties of these drugs are their short duration of action, the development in some cases of the “acid rebound” phenomenon (an increase in acid secretion after the end of the drug’s effect), and the effect on electrolyte metabolism (Shulpekova Yu.O., Ivashkin V.T.).

Currently, sodium sulfate is not used as an antacid.

Sodium sulfate and its compounds have contraindications, side effects and application features; consultation with a specialist is necessary.

Glauber's salt - article in the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron

This section of the article contains outdated information that does not correspond to the approaches of modern medicine

A.A. Lipsky (1856-1915), doctor of medicine

Glauber's salt
has been used in medicine for a long time, both on its own and especially as an integral part of various laxative waters and powders.
It is used in therapy mainly for the purpose of acting on the intestinal canal and less often for a general effect on the body. Small amounts of it (up to ½ g) do not have a noticeable effect on the body, but repeated doses cause relaxation of the intestines and have a general effect on the body (for example, when consuming it, with a proper diet, obesity decreases, etc.). Large quantities, 15–30 g, act quickly as a strong laxative, causing copious amounts of water to be excreted. The secretion of bile, when consuming salt, noticeably increases; the general metabolism, according to Voith, does not change particularly. Its laxative effect is explained by the laws of diffusion and irritation of the intestinal mucosa (see Laxatives). Used in the treatment of gastrointestinal catarrh, chronic constipation (mainly in the form of mineral waters of Carlsbad, Marienbad, Franzensbad, Tarasp, etc.); in the treatment of stomach ulcers (according to Ziemssen), especially in the form of artificial Carlsbad salt; in the old days it was often used for acute inflammatory and febrile processes, for cerebral hyperemia, for typhoid fever, for intermittent fever, etc. According to the Russian pharmacopoeia, pharmacies have: Natrium sulfuricum depuratum crist
.
and Natrium sulfuricum siccum
, - devoid of water of crystallization; the latter is used in doses almost half that of the former.
