Why is fresh liver healthier than canned liver?

Fresh offal is really much healthier than the canned version. There are several explanations for this:

  1. Canned food uses components that have undergone heat treatment and exposure to high temperatures. Accordingly, most substances lose their benefits, for example, vitamins are destroyed by 50%, and ascorbic acid by almost 90%.
  2. To increase shelf life, preservatives are used, and they are known to provoke the development of cancer, pathological changes in internal organs and most systems.
  3. Preservation involves the use of large amounts of salt and fat, and such products are bad for the kidneys, heart and gastrointestinal tract. People who have problems with the listed organs should not overuse canned food.

Attention! During prolonged storage, the contents of the jar oxidize. As a result, taste deteriorates, beneficial properties are lost, and harmful compounds are formed. This is why it is important to check the expiration date.

Harm to cod liver

Like all foods, cod liver can cause harm to the body.

There are a number of contraindications in which its use should be limited or eliminated:

  • individual intolerance;
  • allergic reactions;
  • low blood pressure;
  • taking medications that thin the blood;
  • disorders of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • pathologies of the kidneys, gall bladder and bladder;
  • excess vitamin D and calcium in the body.

Women should take the delicacy with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

People who do not complain of poor health should not abuse it. It is recommended to include no more than 40 g of natural product in the diet once a day; for older people, this norm should be reduced by 25-30%. With frequent use, an imbalance of omega fatty acids is possible, which will negatively affect your well-being in the form of nausea, vomiting, and heaviness in the stomach. The product contains many vitamins; their oversaturation can cause hypervitaminosis, rashes, and itching on the skin.

There are restrictions on use for overweight people. Uncontrolled use can lead to gaining additional kilograms.

How to eat properly

The question is absolutely correct and natural: How much cod liver can you eat so that it brings benefit to the body and not harm?

Nutritionists and gastroenterologists have slightly different views on this, but agree on one thing for sure: the rate of consumption of canned liver will be about 30-40 grams, twice a week. With large portions, you may experience a feeling of nausea (this will be caused by a malfunction of the pancreas), weight gain, intestinal dysfunction, and constipation.

It is advisable to accompany such fatty foods with a fairly light side dish, preferably vegetables. You should not drink liquid after eating cod liver.

Cod liver oil

The composition of cod liver oil is rich in a lot of chemical elements, vitamins, and various organic compounds. The most important component is Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, due to which it has an anti-inflammatory effect.

  • strengthening the musculoskeletal system;
  • lowering blood pressure;
  • protection against eye diseases caused by inflammation;
  • reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression;

Cod liver oil is contraindicated in case of individual intolerance, allergies, stomach and liver problems, since the digestive organs will not be able to digest the high-calorie fatty product.

In addition to its benefits, the oil has a specific taste. If you pour the viscous liquid over a fresh slice of bread, you can get a simple, but nutritious and appetizing sandwich, which, after eating in the morning, you can gain strength and energy for the whole day.

How to choose cod liver

Cod liver is a highly perishable product. Therefore, it can be found fresh only in places where fish are caught. It is mainly bought in the form of canned food. In order to fully enjoy the taste of a seafood product and get maximum benefits, you should choose it correctly, since the benefits and harm to the body will depend on this.

To choose the right cod liver, it is important to focus on the following points:

  1. Appearance of the packaging.
    It is prohibited to purchase canned food if the metal can is damaged. When dents occur, the internal coating is damaged and the product begins to come into contact with iron and oxidize. Liver in bloated packages is also dangerous. This indicates that it is spoiled and harmful bacteria are multiplying inside.
  2. Place of manufacture.
    It is better to give preference to canned goods made in coastal regions, near the place where cod is caught. A high percentage is that the raw materials were not frozen before production. The product made from fresh liver is tender and juicy. On such canned food, manufacturers indicate the highest grade.
  3. Information on the packaging.
    It is important to choose a product made in accordance with GOST. In accordance with the rules, natural cod liver should not contain additives other than salt, pepper, and bay leaf. The period of consumption should not be more than 30 months from the date of production, provided that the product is stored at optimal temperature conditions and is not subject to sudden temperature changes.
  4. Date of manufacture.
    This information should be stamped on the lid of the jar. If it is written on the label, then it is not recommended to purchase such products, since there is a high probability of getting a counterfeit.
  5. The amount of raw materials in the jar.
    To determine the filling volume in canned food, you need to shake the jar. If there is a gurgling sound, then there are more additional components than required by the standards.
  6. Product price
    . High-quality canned food cannot have a budget price.

An opened jar of cod liver cannot be stored for a long time; it is better to consume the offal immediately or within a maximum of 12 hours after opening the package.

If you have the opportunity to buy raw cod liver, then it is important to focus on how it smells and looks. Good raw materials have a mild marine aroma and a milky color with pinkish inclusions. The presence of yellow spots on the product indicates that it has been in the open air for a long time and the fat has begun to oxidize. Such a liver will be very bitter.

Rice should be rinsed with clean water and boiled until tender. The eggs need to be hard-boiled and cut, the onion needs to be chopped, and the cod liver (without oil) is mashed with a fork. Then all components are mixed and seasoned with mayonnaise.

You can add other ingredients to salads: fresh or pickled cucumbers, green peas or hard cheese, herbs, olives or pickled mushrooms. Each version of this salad will have its own unique taste. You can also make sandwiches, tartlets and canapés with cod liver, either with eggs or in combination with other products.
