Research on the effects of spirulina on weight loss

The researchers reviewed 5 research reports in the scientific literature, published through May 2021, in which overweight or obese subjects took supplements containing 1-5 grams of spirulina per day for 6-12 weeks - and in which the researchers later found an effect supplements for body weight. All studies took place in conditions not associated with dieting aimed at losing weight and other lifestyle changes for the same purpose. That is, taking spirulina or placebo is the only thing that changed in the lives of the participants.

The best dosage was supposed to be 2 grams per day.

How does spirulina help with weight loss?

Spirulina , entering the human body, gradually removes waste and toxins of any kind from the body, which helps reduce the level of lipids and cholesterol in the blood, and, in turn, leads to the improvement and stabilization of metabolic processes.

Due to its high nutritional value, spirulina can significantly reduce appetite. 10 grams of this plant contains as much protein as a kilogram of beef, as well as a large amount of calcium, potassium, iron, manganese, zinc, magnesium, selenium and vitamins. The possible mechanism of the changes that occurred has an explanation. Thus, in one randomized controlled trial in humans (50 participants), the addition of spirulina for a period of 3 months at a dosage of 2 g per day improved insulin sensitivity, and also led to a significant reduction in body weight and body mass index. It also had a significant lowering effect on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels and significantly improved overall antioxidant status (2).

In another study of 64 obese people aged 20-50 years, the group given 500 mg of Spirulina platensis twice daily for 12 weeks achieved a noticeable reduction in appetite.

This same group showed greater weight loss than the placebo group (3).

The researchers hypothesized that these effects (increased insulin sensitivity and decreased appetite) reveal the mechanism by which spirulina influences weight loss.

Spirulina tablets caught my attention, I won’t go into details about what they are. There are a lot of reviews about them, and everyone is different, my curiosity got the better of me and I still decided to try them on myself.

Today I want to talk about the dietary supplement Spirulina tablets.

I ordered them on Aliexpress.

At the time of purchase they cost $8.92. I received them about a month after purchase.

Their weight was about 250 grams, in the package, as indicated by the seller, 1000 tablets.

They are packed in a foil, waterproof, sealed, inconspicuous bag. On which there is only one sticker with a name and description. Everything is in Chinese, nothing can be understood. There is also a stamp on top of the package with an expiration date. After opening this package there were a lot of tablets inside; I did not count them to check the number of pieces. It looks like there are a lot of them - enough, as they say.

There was also green dust from these tablets on the walls of the bag.

The tablets themselves are dark green in color and not large in size. In order to lose weight, you need to drink them twice a day in the morning on an empty stomach and in the evening with your last meal of the day, or even better, instead, 3-5 tablets at a time.

That’s what I did, took 3 tablets twice a day.

The first time I drank them for about a month, but not always regularly, sometimes I could forget. As a result, I didn’t lose any weight at all and didn’t notice any improvements for myself.

Then there was a break for several months.

In the fall, I decided to take charge of myself. And I took these pills regularly, for two months, 3 pieces twice a day. The very first thing I noticed for myself was that I became less tired during the day, my vital energy really increased. On the seller's website, it was written in capital letters anti-fatigue, everything is correct here.

At first it seemed to me that my appetite had also decreased and that I didn’t want to eat as much, but this was a mistaken opinion. As long as I mentally restrained myself, everything was fine, but as soon as I relaxed even a little, my insatiable appetite quickly returned.

I never managed to lose even one kilogram. Still, the most effective thing is to restrain yourself in food, especially sweets and high-calorie foods.

Therefore, do not believe those who lose weight with the help of Spirulina, it is not true!

After using it, I still have less than half a packet of tablets left, of course I will finish them in the next course. But I'm unlikely to buy any more.

Therefore, I do not recommend Spirulina to anyone specifically for weight loss; do not believe the advertising. But if you need it for other indications, then the choice is yours whether to buy it or not.

I can’t say anything about the deterioration/improvement of my health; it seems that everything has remained at the same level.
