Waffles were known not only in Germany and France. Thus, Belgian legend says that in Belgium they were invented in the 18th century by the cook of the Prince of Liege. By order of the prince, the cook tried to bake a special pastry. Seduced by the delicious vanilla aroma that rose from the baking, the prince could not resist the charm of the new dessert. Gradually, this delicacy gained popularity not only in the Liege region, but throughout Belgium. In the Czech Republic, the first “spa waffles” also appeared in the 18th century. Historical sources contain references to the fact that “some bourgeois women bake waffles and then carry them around for sale.” “Resort” ones, which today are the property of the Czech Republic, were filled with almonds and sugar and were light brown in color.

On the one hand, this confectionery product is loved by many of us, but on the other hand, it poses a serious threat to the figure, and everyone knows this.

History of the delicacy

The very first waffles were prepared back in medieval times, when they were perceived as just one of the varieties of ordinary cookies. The distinctive features of this “new cookie” were the manufacturing technology with a traditional pattern on the surface of the delicacy in the form of an imprint and the composition of the waffle dough. It was prepared from cream, flour, water, sugar and eggs.

Historical facts indicate that waffles were known both in Ancient Greece and Germany. The first mentions of this product date back to the 13th century, and in the 15-16th centuries only a person with a noble pedigree could afford to bake such a dessert, since none of the lower strata of the population knew about the recipe for the new dessert; it was kept in the strictest confidence. Waffles appeared on the American continent in the 17th century during the mass emigration of the Dutch to these lands. In those days, this was an exclusively home-made dish; waffles were about 13 centimeters thick and until the 14th century were an indicator of poverty, because they were baked from the remains of bread dough mixed with water. Later, people learned to flavor baked goods with various syrups, and since then waffles have become a confectionery delicacy available only to a select few.

According to Belgian legend, waffles were invented in the 18th century by a cook commissioned by the Belgian Prince of Liege. The crowned lady wanted to try some incredible baked goods, and the cook came up with the idea of baking waffles, generously flavoring the dough with vanilla. The aroma of vanilla overwhelmed the prince and Belgian waffles became a favorite delicacy of the royal court. After some time, this dessert spread throughout Belgium. In the same 18th century, the first waffle desserts also appeared in the Czech Republic. “Resort waffles” are to this day a national treasure of the Czech Republic; sugar and almonds are generously added to them, which give the dessert an unusual and aristocratic flavor.

Since the 60s of the 19th century, waffles have become widely popular, due to which they begin to be produced on an industrial scale. At the same time, industrial production of beet sugar, as well as baking equipment, began to develop, which contributed to the rapid growth in the spread of waffles among the population.

What do waffles bring to our figure?

The harmful properties of waffles are obvious. This delicacy contains a lot of carbohydrate compounds. Therefore, if we eat a lot of it, it will not have the best effect on our weight. Moreover, sugar levels may increase, as well as the amount of “bad” cholesterol.

On a note! Believe it or not, waffles can also be beneficial for us. True, if you eat them in moderation. The “usefulness” of treats is due to the presence of fiber, which our body needs for normal functioning.

In order not to deny yourself sweets and at the same time not to gain weight quickly, listen to these tips:

  • Choose baked goods that do not contain additional ingredients. Waffles with icing, chocolate filling and condensed milk are prohibited. They have a lot of sugar, but zero benefits.
  • Buy desserts in the “healthy menu” departments. Their components are natural, therefore, they cannot harm our figure.
  • Would you like some waffles? Prepare them yourself. This way you can reduce the calorie content of baked goods, for example, by reducing the sugar and fat content.
