Milk thistle oil use in capsules: benefits and harms, method of application

Description of the plant

The milk thistle plant has several names: Milk thistle, Maryin tartar. It grows in European countries. In Russia it is considered a common weed. It grows in desert places and along roadways. The prickly plant has an unusual shape of leaves, on which there are blurry spots of white color. The fruit is an achene with a surrounding pink basket that looks like a cap. It reaches a height of more than 160 cm and above. Ripening occurs within one or two years. This is not a perennial weed that has the ability to spread its root system. The seeds ripen in the basket at the end of August. The plant has no odor. When consumed in decoctions, it has a bitter aftertaste.

pharmachologic effect

The main purpose of prescribing milk thistle is to improve liver function. Silymarin is responsible for restoring detoxification function due to its antioxidant properties. The hepatoprotective effect comes to the aid of cirrhosis and hepatosis.

The rich composition of the drug causes a number of effects on the body:

  • Anti-inflammatory;
  • Antioxidant;
  • Choleretic;
  • General strengthening;
  • Antiallergic;
  • Antiulcer;
  • Antihistamine;
  • Immunomodulatory.

Indications for use

According to the instructions for use, milk thistle oil in capsules is indicated for the following diseases and pathological conditions:

  • liver diseases (hepatitis of various etiologies, cirrhosis, alcoholic or non-alcoholic fatty infiltration, cholelithiasis, gallbladder dyskinesia);
  • gastritis or stomach ulcer;
  • colitis, enterocolitis;
  • hypertension;
  • atherosclerotic vascular lesions;
  • cardiac ischemia;
  • diabetes;
  • dermatitis;
  • deficiency of vitamins A, E.

Silymarin is also used as a hepatoprotector during chemotherapy of malignant tumors. A positive effect has also been recorded in cases of severe toxic liver damage: capsules with milk thistle oil can be taken as an antidote for poisoning caused by toadstool.

Topically milk thistle oil is used in the following areas:

  • dentistry (stomatitis, gingivitis);
  • otorhinolaryngology (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, rhinitis);
  • gynecology (colpitis, erosion, vaginal dryness);
  • cosmetology (as a component of nourishing masks).

Indications for use of milk thistle oil in capsules

The main indication for the use of milk thistle or milk thistle oil is the need to protect the liver. Today it has become very fashionable to constantly clean and protect something, meanwhile medicine is quite radical in its attitude towards lovers of such prevention.

Indications for the need for such “support” are:

  • real, actual poisoning with salts of heavy metals;
  • being in a radioactive zone;
  • poisoning by pesticides and fungicides;
  • prevention of the negative impact of chemicals in hazardous types of work, the list of which is approved by the state;
  • alcohol poisoning, including one-time;
  • chronic alcoholism;
  • treatment with antidepressant courses, taking MAO inhibitors;
  • long-term antibiotic treatment;
  • medical abortion;
  • taking hormonal medications, including steroid hormones “for sports” (although this is precisely illegal and not recommended by doctors).

If you, say, just drink coffee on a regular basis and indulge in buns a couple of times a week, you probably shouldn't seriously think about cleansing procedures and drinking oils.

Officially, milk thistle oil is not a cleanser at all, but “an additional source of essential fatty acids and vitamin E.”

Accordingly, the following can be added to the indications:

  • atherosclerosis, the threat of its occurrence;
  • hypertension;
  • increased levels of “bad” cholesterol;
  • insufficiently rapid healing of wounds;
  • prevention of premature aging;
  • prevention of disorders of the hormonal system, especially when using low-calorie diets;
  • prevention of diseases of the organs of vision associated with systematic overwork;
  • prevention of increased fatigue and immune disorders.

Take milk thistle oil in capsules, 4 pieces per serving, 3 times a day, with meals. Oil cannot replace vitamins; a source of vitamin E, it contains only 13% of the daily requirement of this substance. And it does not completely fill the need for omega-three, “covering” only 10-13% of the body’s needs.

Contraindications and precautions

Absolute contraindications include:

  • allergy to the components of the drug;
  • acute cholecystitis or pancreatitis;
  • clinical depression;
  • epilepsy;
  • bronchial asthma.

During pregnancy or lactation, capsules can be taken only in consultation with a doctor. The oil also has a laxative effect, so for any diseases associated with diarrhea, milk thistle capsules should be consumed with caution, in small quantities. In case of chronic heart failure or impaired renal function, monitoring of potassium levels in the blood is required.

Caution should also be exercised in the presence of cholelithiasis. Due to the pronounced choleretic effect of silymarin, it is recommended to combine milk thistle with antispasmodics that relax the sphincter of Oddi. This will help prevent the stone from getting stuck in the duct and the development of biliary colic.

Attention! Before starting treatment, it is necessary to perform an ultrasound of the hepatobiliary zone to assess the number and size of stones.

Any choleretic drugs are contraindicated in the presence of single large stones or more than 3 small ones. Sand or echogenic suspension in the gallbladder can be treated and is therefore not a contraindication.

Liver cleanse with milk thistle

The liver performs a number of important functions that are necessary for many processes in the body.
Therefore, the organ needs to be given attention to prevent the risk of various diseases that can harm the functioning of the entire body. To ensure that the organ functions smoothly, milk thistle is used to cleanse the liver. The plant, otherwise called milk thistle or thorn, is perfect for this procedure, because it is able to remove all toxins and harmful substances from the body.

Properties of milk thistle

We can talk about the beneficial properties of the plant for a very long time, so the following were listed among them, invaluable for the human body:

• Relieves inflammation. Taking milk thistle ensures that the patient relieves inflammation in the body. This is especially useful for diseases of the genitourinary system.

• Restores dead liver cells. Due to this action of the herb, it is often used to produce medicines. This component, contained in medical products, accelerates the process of liver cell regeneration.

• Removes stones, treats bile diseases. In the presence of urolithiasis, milk thistle can reduce pain when urinating and remove stones from the kidneys.

• Suppression of exposure to harmful substances. Milk thistle helps protect organs from the influence of harmful substances, toxins, and poisons that enter the body after eating.

Even healthy people who do not have liver problems need to take the plant. Milk thistle will have a positive effect not only on this organ, but also on the immune system and the general condition of a person.

Contraindications to the use of milk thistle

Milk thistle has no side effects, so its use is allowed for almost all people. Despite the “safety” of the herb, some contraindications still exist:

• Epilepsy. Epileptic seizures occur in 80% of cases of taking this plant.

• Cardiovascular diseases. The use of the plant is not recommended during the postoperative period associated with heart disease.

• Diseases of the respiratory system and respiratory tract. If the disease is in the acute stage, milk thistle can cause an attack of asphyxia or serious complications.

• For mental disorders. In rare cases, taking this drug can cause an exacerbation of psychological distress.

• Age up to 25 years. Taking milk thistle is recommended for people over 25 years of age, because it is by this time that a lot of harmful substances accumulate in the human body.

Important: if the patient decides to take this traditional medicine, it is necessary to consult a doctor to exclude the presence of various contraindications.

Release forms

Milk thistle capsules may contain extract or oil from the plant's seeds. The main active ingredient of the first is silymarin, it is used to protect or restore the liver.

The oil has a richer composition, including polyunsaturated fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins, and accordingly has many indications. However, when taking this form of release, side effects are often observed in the form of diarrhea or discomfort in the right hypochondrium, caused by a powerful choleretic effect. Capsules with oil can be consumed only if the function of the pancreas is fully preserved: a deficiency of the lipase produced by it will lead to poor digestibility and steatorrhea.

What hepatoprotectors are most popular?

Russian pharmacies offer their customers a wide range of medications. Let's look at the most famous medications that improve liver condition: Essentiale. It is effective in the treatment of liver cirrhosis. Essentiale improves liver function and prevents the formation of stones in the bile ducts. The only drawback of these capsules is their high price. Result. It contains vitamin E. This product contains the same active ingredients as Essentiale, while the cost of Rezalute is significantly lower. Due to the presence of vitamin E in the formula, it has a pronounced antioxidant effect. Rezalut can treat toxic liver damage. The drug may cause diarrhea and urticaria. Hepa-merz. It is based on ornithine. This remedy should be prescribed by a specialist. Independent and uncontrolled use of the drug is not allowed: Hepa-Mertz has a large number of serious side effects, so care must be taken during a course of treatment with this drug. Its use can lead to severe kidney failure. Capsules quickly reduce intoxication of the body. For liver damage caused by excessive drinking, Hepa-Merz is ineffective. Heptral. The benefits of this hepatoprotector in the treatment of alcoholic liver damage have long been proven. It has a positive effect on liver function: the well-being of patients improves significantly. The drug must be used for a long time. Positive dynamics can be observed after a week of regular use of Heptral. It comes in various forms: it is preferable to use it in the form of an injection solution, since the effectiveness of tablets is much lower. Unpleasant symptoms of the disease can be eliminated with tablets containing phospholipids. They help strengthen the liver cell membrane. They need to be taken for a long time.

Liver diseases are also treated with drugs made on the basis of Ornithine. It is an amino acid. Ornithine helps reduce the amount of ammonia in the blood. The drug is contraindicated in severe kidney pathologies. In the drug "Karsil Forte" the main active ingredient is milk thistle. The medicinal properties of this plant have been studied many years ago. Milk thistle has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This plant contains silymarin. It helps restore damaged liver structure. To treat severe forms of the disease, you need to take at least three capsules per day. The duration of taking the drug is 60 days. For liver cirrhosis, medicines made from artichoke are also used. It activates metabolic processes in the body and reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood. Artichoke is contained in a preparation called “Hofitol”. The medicine called "Liv 52" contains a large amount of nightshade and caper extract. It also contains yarrow, chicory, and cassia. This remedy is effective for liver diseases, since the biologically active substances included in its composition improve the function of the organ. Cirrhosis can be treated with pharmaceutical products made from licorice root. They contain glycyrrhizic acid. Modern scientists have recognized its importance in the treatment of liver diseases. This substance has antimicrobial and antioxidant effects. Tablets containing licorice root are contraindicated in case of individual sensitivity to the components of the product. They should not be prescribed to children under twelve years of age or to pregnant women. All of the hepatoprotectors listed have both advantages and disadvantages, so they must be taken under the supervision of a doctor. In case of liver cirrhosis, maintaining a balanced diet and avoiding drinking alcohol are of great importance.

Interaction with other drugs

Some drugs can enhance the effect of milk thistle oil, while others can reduce the effect.

The first group includes the following medications:

  • antibacterial drugs (rifampin and erythromycin);
  • astemizole, seldan and some other antihistamines;
  • rhythmol, tambacor (stimulate the cardiovascular system);
  • ergot.

The effect of milk thistle extract is reduced when taking the following substances:

  • estrogen (hormonal drug);
  • mepron;
  • lorazepam.

You cannot combine the above-described remedies with a food additive: it is difficult to predict the body’s reaction and can significantly harm your health.

Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

The beneficial properties of thistle oil and its effect on all body systems, without exception, are often the reason for its use by women during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, the effect of the product on the developing fetus may be diametrically opposite and cause harm instead of benefit. A baby in the womb or a newborn receiving the drug with milk may be among those for whom taking milk thistle oil is strictly contraindicated.

That is why taking the oil during pregnancy and lactation is undesirable, as most instructions for using the drug indicate. However, there are no rules without exceptions. There has been no evidence of adverse effects from the use of the oil during pregnancy and lactation in animals. Therefore, admission is still permissible if the benefits of treatment significantly exceed the possible risks for the child.

Milk thistle oil and children

The properties of thistle oil to have a mild effect on the liver, normalize metabolism, strengthen the immune system, enhance intestinal motility, without causing addiction, suggest its unhindered use for treating children. The opinion of doctors in this case is unanimous: the drug can be used only after consultation with a specialist . In addition, several rules must be followed to avoid negative results:

  • Do not give oil to children under three years of age;
  • Use meal if the child is under 12 years old;
  • Use oil in capsules after no earlier than twelve years.

External use has no age restrictions. Treatment of wounds, cracks, and inflammatory skin diseases can be carried out from birth.

Difficulties in liver function

With congestion in the liver and gall bladder, a person feels much worse. The situation becomes more complicated if hepatitis, jaundice, or cirrhosis are suspected. Milk thistle oil has its own uses for the liver, which we will discuss below. After the treatment course, the bile ducts and bladder are cleared of tumors, the structure of the liver is restored and its work is facilitated. Experts recommend taking the oil in capsules for inflammatory processes of the gallbladder.

Diabetes

Diabetes is characterized by high levels of sugar in the blood. Cells do not have the appropriate receptors to pull glucose in, so it accumulates on the surface. Due to lack of carbohydrates, healthy tissues die. But milk thistle oil in capsules will increase sensitivity to insulin. The benefits and harms for diabetics have been proven repeatedly, but before taking, you need to study the dosage indicated above in the instructions for use.

Skin problems

The beneficial properties of milk thistle oil in capsule or liquid form extend to people who suffer from dermatological problems. Ingestion is carried out in the presence of trophic ulcers, burns, long-term non-healing wounds and abrasions, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, lichen, acne, diaper rash, rash and allergic reaction to the skin. But in addition to taking the capsules, you need to lubricate the affected areas with liquid oil. Then healing will take place quickly and effectively, and there will be no scarring.

Diseases of a female nature

Milk thistle oil is often prescribed for women with gynecological problems. In case of severe colpitis, cervical erosion, atrophic vaginitis, the drug will have a healing effect. To enhance the result, you need to moisten the tampon in liquid milk thistle oil and insert it vaginally.

Problems with the male reproductive system

Not without value for the male reproductive system and reproductive activity. Milk thistle oil in capsules is recommended for use, because the benefits and harms are unequal. The beneficial properties clearly prevail; a man’s potency increases due to increased blood circulation to the groin area. Before taking the drug, we recommend visiting a specialist. The oil also improves the quality of sperm and the “hotness” of sperm, thereby increasing the chances of conception. Milk thistle in any form is introduced into the menu for those who soon plan to continue the family line.

Benefits of milk thistle oil in capsules

The product contains approximately 899 kcal per 100 g, so the capsule form is preferable for determining the exact dosage. For people with eating problems, this option is more suitable than drinking oil with spoons.

Like other vegetable oils, this product contains vitamins A, E and C. This complex is considered anti-aging. It neutralizes the effect of free radicals on cell membranes and prevents early aging.

The oil contains a complex of plant amino acids that promote powerful tissue restoration after physical exertion, various injuries and even operations.

Considered a source of beneficial omega-three fatty acids. Omega-3 can fight the “deposition” of bad cholesterol on the walls of blood vessels. They are considered the main means of preventing such typical modern diseases as ischemia, angina, hypertension, and vascular problems. There are studies showing that the active inclusion of omega-3 in the diet helps fight metabolic syndrome and prevent diabetes and obesity. Omega-3s also contribute to the normalization of hormonal metabolism and the correct and timely production of sex hormones.

Omega three source oils are recommended for anyone who experiences increased mental or physical tension, constantly faces stress, and is forced to endure the negative impact of a contaminated environment.

Milk thistle oil is rich in silymarin, a substance that also has antioxidant properties. In fact, it enhances all regenerative processes in the body. Studies show that in combination with conventional drug treatment, the use of silymarin preparations can improve the condition of patients with cardiac diseases, metabolic diseases, liver, kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract. In some cases, the drug also shows effectiveness in the treatment of diseases of the nervous system. It is used as a general tonic for severe systemic diseases.

Silymarin is an antidote to the poison of the white toadstool mushroom. It is used in clinical settings when poisoning is suspected.

Milk thistle in capsules for weight loss

Noticeable weight loss when taking thistle oil is not due to the magical burning of fat by this drug. Milk thistle does not act on the consequences, which are extra pounds, but on the causes of their accumulation.

First of all, thistle helps the liver cleanse itself and normalize its functions. Thus, toxins accumulated in the liver and contribute to fat deposition are removed. However, detoxification does not end there. Fats that enter the body with food begin to be better processed, which prevents them from going to storage for many years. Hormonal levels are normalized, and it is precisely its disturbances that often cause excess weight . Metabolism also receives the same effect - the key to a slim and beautiful body. For those who are very impatient to lose weight, a mild laxative effect will also come in handy. The main thing is to adhere to several rules when using milk thistle oil in capsules for weight loss:

  • Do not exceed the recommended dose. It is better to take dandelion infusion along with the oil, which enhances the properties of thistle.
  • The course of treatment should last no more than three weeks. After two weeks of rest, you can repeat the dose.
  • Eliminate fast food, baked goods, sweets, spicy and pickled foods from your diet.
  • Go jogging or walk more in the fresh air.
  • Do not use oil for salad dressing, as it quickly loses its healing properties when exposed to air.

Taking oil for weight loss is divided into two stages during the course. During the first stage, the dosage is one capsule twice a day, half an hour before meals. It is necessary to drink the capsules with warm mineral water without gas. Provided normal absorption, in the second stage the dose is increased to three capsules before morning and evening meals.

Reception scheme

One of the most important and controversial issues is how to take milk thistle oil for weight loss to get results without harming your health.

Many people make the mistake of adhering to the dosages specified in the instructions for medications purchased at the pharmacy. After all, they are given on the basis that a person will be treated for various diseases, and the course of such therapy is usually no more than 10-14 days. For example:

  • liquid milk thistle oil: daily adult dose is 1-2 teaspoons with meals, divided into 2 doses;
  • milk thistle oil in capsules: you need to drink 5 capsules a day according to the above scheme (twice a day with meals).

There is no need to follow such a plan when losing weight. Here you need to listen exclusively to nutritionists, and they strongly recommend the following dosages:

  • 1 week - half a teaspoon or 1 capsule (for reconnaissance, to find out the body’s reaction to the drug);
  • 2-4 weeks - if there are no side effects, increase the dosage to 1 teaspoon and 2 capsules;
  • 2nd month of weight loss - if you still have strength and patience, you can continue to get rid of extra pounds by increasing the portion to 1 tablespoon and 3 capsules per day.

You cannot divide the dosage of milk thistle oil when losing weight - this is different from the course of treatment. Everything is drunk at once, and always in the morning, shortly before breakfast (about 15-30 minutes). It is recommended to drink the product with warm water (about 200 ml, i.e. a glass).

If at some stage of losing weight it becomes unbearable to look at milk thistle oil, since by the end of the month it becomes quite boring, make it easier for yourself: add the indicated portion of the product to a glass of kefir (juice, milk) and drink. Both tasty and healthy!

In this way, many people lose 3-4 kg per month. But some in their reviews complain that the oil did not help them at all: the problem here may lie in small, but very important nuances of the weight loss process with the help of this oily plant extract.

This is interesting! Thistle is “scaring of devils” because milk thistle in Rus' was considered a home amulet, the guardian of harmony, goodness and comfort in the home. It is used in folk medicine, used to be the emblem of knights and is even present on the coats of arms of Scotland.

Side effects and contraindications

Despite the fact that milk thistle oil is a natural preparation, it, like other medicines, has a number of contraindications:

  • pain in the projection of the gallbladder;
  • nausea;
  • vomit;
  • flatulence;
  • loosening of stool.

All signs are relieved by discontinuation of the drug. After normalization of the functioning of the digestive system, milk thistle treatment can be continued.
