Liepaja diet of Dr. Hazan: principles, menu, pros and cons

General rules and principles of Dr. Khazan's diet

According to this system, meals will be three times a day. Snacking is completely prohibited. According to Dr. Khazan, the main problem for overweight people is low blood sugar. The established restrictions are designed to correct this problem and normalize the functioning of the pancreas . Dr. Hazan's Liepaja diet is suitable for both men and women. To lose weight you must adhere to the following rules:

  • Consume no more than 1200 kilocalories daily.
  • Drink at least 1.5 liters of liquid per day. In summer you can increase its quantity to 2-2.5 liters. It is permissible to replace water with unsweetened tea with or without lemon, natural juices without sugar, and unsweetened coffee.
  • Vegetable dishes are consumed without salt.
  • You can eat any stale bread.
  • When preparing first courses, you need to reduce the amount of salt.
  • For cooking, you can only use butter. Margarine and spreads (fatty products) are prohibited.
  • If the nutrition system is disrupted, the next day you need to go to the normal regime, according to the schedule. After 2-3 days, the weight will begin to decrease at a standard pace.
  • Take vitamin and mineral supplements to avoid vitamin deficiency.
  • Monitor the condition of the skin. If signs of sagging appear, cosmetic procedures should be carried out to prevent sagging skin.

Dr. Khazan recommends taking regular measurements to stay motivated. You need to weigh yourself every day at the same time. This will help you track changes in your body weight. Pulse and blood pressure should be measured daily. Once a week, someone losing weight donates blood for sugar testing. Twice a month it is necessary to measure the circumference of the chest, waist, hips, and neck.
You need to stick to this weight loss system for 3 months. Upon completion of the diet, a break of 1-3 months is required.

Fully or partially limited products

The diet is based on the exclusion of foods containing carbohydrates - sugar, candy, baked goods, pasta, sweet fruits (melon, grapes, pear, banana). You need to change your habits and enjoy unsweetened tea and coffee, juices without added sugar. Milk, cream, artificial sweeteners, as well as lemon and other fruits should also not be added to tea and coffee.

Since the daily diet should not exceed 1200 kcal, it goes without saying that it is better to exclude fatty meats and fish, fatty sausages and cheese. Salt is completely excluded from the diet; if this is not possible, then preference is given to sea salt in a minimal amount. To improve the taste of food, it is allowed to use seasonings. Alcoholic drinks and carbonated water are specifically prohibited.

Allowed foods and drinks

The Liepāja diet does not impose overly strict food restrictions. For lunch on all days, except the fasting day, you can eat fried, baked, boiled meat. Low-calorie dressings are allowed: dietary mayonnaise, sugar-free mustard sauce with a fat content of no more than 2%, etc. You can even eat chicken or beef chops fried without oil. The total weight of one serving of food should not exceed 160 g. If it is too difficult for a person losing weight to give up sweets, a sweetener can be used instead of sugar. Authorized products:

  • apples;
  • all fresh vegetables;
  • poultry (turkey, chicken);
  • low-fat dairy products;
  • all types of seasonings;
  • honey;
  • fruit juices;
  • all types of nuts (preference should be given to walnuts).

List of prohibited products

The daily ration of the Liepaja diet should not exceed 1200 kcal, so you will have to exclude sausages, fatty meats, and cheese from the menu. Nutritionist Khazan recommends completely avoiding salt. To improve the taste of cooked dishes, you can add seasoning. Sweet fruits, candies, pasta, and baked goods are prohibited. The taboo applies to the following products:

  • bananas, melon, grapes, pear;
  • dried fruits;
  • jam;
  • ice cream;
  • jam;
  • sugar, salt;
  • pastries, cakes, cookies;
  • alcohol;
  • carbonated and sweet drinks.

Authorized Products

As for breakfast, coffee has restrictions only regarding additives (sugar, cream, milk). There are no restrictions on the amount, but it is important to drink the same amount every morning. In the morning there is an alternative - tea, regular loose leaf or bagged and without additives.

The dimensions of a portioned piece of bread (60 x 90 x 15 mm) and permitted additives to it in the form of cheese and sausage (60 x 90 x 12 mm) are strictly specified; low-fat varieties are preferable. The butter is spread on the bread in a thin, almost transparent layer. Any bread, but dried. On certain days, instead of sandwiches, you need to eat two eggs: hard-boiled, “in a bag,” soft-boiled, fried (fried egg or omelette), cooked in a frying pan without oil.

Baked fish

For lunch, on all days except the fasting day, meat and fish can be eaten fried, baked or boiled, but no more than 130-140 g in finished form, and with sauce - 160 g. It can even be a fried chop with or without seasonings. However, natural cooked meat is better - beef, chicken, turkey, pork, rabbit. Any sauce is allowed, if it is mayonnaise, then light or cocktail sauce for seafood.

The salad is made from 3 types of fresh vegetables, some can be eaten boiled or stewed (beets, cauliflower), as well as canned (green peas). Greens - unlimited.

Do not add vegetable oil. Meat and fish are weighed; volume is important for side dishes. It should be smaller in volume than a hot dish. You should proceed from the volume of water - 120 ml for men and 90 ml. for women. The water level in the glass serves as a measure for a side dish for lunch, vinaigrette and meat salad for dinner.

The last dishes are prepared according to the usual recipes and rotate every day for dinner. Meat salad is seasoned with sour cream or mayonnaise in the amount of 1 tablespoon.

Canned seafood (sardines, tuna, mackerel, shrimp, caviar) are allowed in the amount of 1 tablespoon. A fasting day is considered a curd day. Preference is given to low-fat cottage cheese and milk (kefir).

It is also recommended to unload after unforeseen feasts, and then eat again according to the proposed schedule.

Freshly squeezed juice (220-230 ml) is preferable, but you can drink it from packages - fruit juice (without sugar) or vegetable juice.

Nutrition is designed for the responsibility and determination of everyone: any indulgence prevents you from losing kilos. Based on Dr. Khazan’s observations of his patients, the conclusion was drawn that any attempt to modify their diet greatly slows down or completely stops weight loss.

Menu for 3 months

It will be easier to stick to your diet if you start keeping a personal weight loss diary. There you need to enter a schedule of dishes for the week with recipes for their preparation. It can also be used to track the dynamics of changes in the circumference of the neck, waist, hips, and chest. You cannot replace some products with others, because this will lead to weight gain again. The exception is food allergies. Then you can choose an alternative. Dishes should be selected based on product availability. When drawing up a weekly menu, you need to remember the following rules:

  1. Use only approved products for cooking.
  2. Eat food every 5 hours. The maximum time period is 5.5 hours.
  3. The serving size of one dish should not exceed 150 g.

  • 4 walnuts.
  • 2 tablespoons of honey.
  • 250 ml milk.
  • 2 apples.

Diet menu for the second month

The diet remains the same, but you can allow yourself to eat some foods containing sugar. These include raisins, unleavened crackers and sweet curd mass. From the second month you can make scrambled eggs for breakfast with vegetables and herbs (dill, cabbage, tomatoes, bell peppers). The serving size remains the same - 150 g. On a fasting day, the apple can be replaced with 120 g of berries.

Nutrition in the third month of the diet

The basic diet is maintained, but another fasting day is added. For 5 meals, someone losing weight can drink 7 glasses of kefir or eat 1 kilogram of apples. If desired, you can add vegetable broths or soups to your existing diet. Their volume should not exceed 350 ml. Soups replace half of the fish or meat lunch. But this requirement is not mandatory. You can continue to follow the menu for the second month.

Deviations from the standard diet, with the exception of soups and broths, must be kept to a minimum. Eating large quantities of sweet curd mass, raisins and various fruits will cause weight loss to stop. You can return to eating your favorite food after completing the diet, but you must remember that for the first 2 weeks the portion should not be more than 150-200 g.

Basic principles

The Liepaja diet surprises not only with its unusual name, but also with its weight loss scheme itself. It has points that distinguish it from other methods. Therefore, it is first worth studying the basic principles by which you will have to live for more than one month.

  1. The list of prohibited products is minimal. Khazan allowed the consumption of mayonnaise, sour cream, sausage, canned food, cheese and even beer.
  2. The food should be low-calorie: the daily norm is 1,200 kcal.
  3. Weight loss is achieved by reducing portion sizes: men should eat no more than 500 g of food per day, women - 400 g.
  4. The food is predominantly protein, low in carbohydrates and fats.
  5. The diet consists of alternating different types of proteins every other day: for breakfast - a sandwich with cheese / meat, for lunch - hot meat / fish.
  6. Three meals without snacks are organized at a strictly defined time, which causes the metabolism to speed up after just a week.
  7. There is one fasting cottage cheese day per week.
  8. In the first 1-2 months, the menu is stable and does not allow any deviations from the author’s methodology. Then adjustments are possible.
  9. Salt is excluded or at least limited to a minimum.
  10. Full weight loss course - 4 months.

The main feature of the Liepaja diet is the stability of its menu and the above principles. Nothing can be changed in them. As Bogomolov notes, any deviations can disrupt the well-functioning mechanism of losing weight and accelerating metabolism. This is explained by the fact that Dr. Khazan worked for a long time on its creation, carefully selecting products and portion sizes, taking into account the smallest details of the diet.

Recipes for weight loss

The Liepaja diet is gentle, i.e. a person will not have to dramatically rearrange his diet and eat unusual foods. If desired, you can prepare potato casserole, dietary Olivier, seafood salads, etc. The total calorie content of food should not exceed 300-400 kcal. Preference should be given to dishes containing a large number of vegetables (at least 3). Plant foods activate the intestines. Vegetables and meat should be baked at a temperature no higher than 180 degrees. This will help preserve the maximum amount of nutrients.

The vinaigrette

The classic salad recipe contains pickled cucumbers, but due to the large amount of salt, they will have to be excluded. It is necessary to boil potatoes, carrots, beets, and then cut into cubes. All ingredients are mixed, and then canned peas, sauerkraut, finely chopped onions are added to them and seasoned with olive oil. Products are taken in equal proportions, i.e. 100 g potatoes, 100 g carrots, 100 g beets, etc. You cannot add meat to the vinaigrette. For dressing use 5-10 ml of olive oil, i.e. half a teaspoon.

Vegetable side dish

Vegetable dishes contain many vitamins and microelements. They help activate digestion and improve intestinal function. One of the popular vegetable side dishes is ratatouille. There will be no difficulties in preparing this dish, because... All ingredients can be found in the store or in your refrigerator. Vegetables should be stewed without adding oil. Ingredients for making ratatouille:

  • Zucchini or eggplant – 500 g;
  • Onion – 1 piece;
  • Carrots – 200 g;
  • Medium tomatoes - 2-3 pieces;
  • Chopped parsley – 50 g;
  • Salt and pepper to taste..

Finely chop the onion, carrots and tomatoes, then place in a frying pan and simmer for 5 minutes over medium heat. Vegetables must be stirred constantly. Peel the zucchini, cut into small cubes, add to the frying pan with the onions, carrots, and tomatoes. Simmer for 5 minutes over medium heat, and then another 10 minutes over low heat. When the dish is ready, add chopped parsley. Ratatouille should be allowed to brew for 10 minutes, and then you can start eating.

Fish poached with white sauce

To prepare the dish you will need:

  • lean pike perch, sturgeon, trout, beluga or stellate sturgeon - 125 g;
  • champignons or porcini mushrooms – 20 g;
  • lemon slice – 8 g;
  • onion - half an onion;
  • parsley root – 2 g;
  • flour – 20 g.

The fish must be divided into portions, be sure to remove the skin and bones. Then the product is placed in a container and filled with boiling water. Chopped parsley, onions and mushrooms are added to the fish. Cover the container with a lid and leave on low heat. The fish is pulled out after 20-30 minutes, and the champignons after 5-10 minutes. Porcini mushrooms are cooked for 35-40 minutes.

The remaining broth is used to make white sauce. Add chopped herbs and flour sauté to the boiling liquid. The ingredients are mixed and then boiled for 10 minutes. Next, you need to strain the broth, bring it to a boil, and then add the juice of a lemon slice and spices. After the sauce thickens a little, remove it from the stove. The fish is served with a side dish of vegetables or mashed potatoes prepared without butter, milk or eggs.

A year has passed since the death of the outstanding nutritionist. Five years ago, I twice turned to the personality of one of the most outstanding nutritionists of our time, a man who glorified the small Latvian town of Liepaja more than its metallurgical plant, port and hockey team “Metallurgs” combined.

(“Top Secret” 2011 No. 7 and No. 11/270). If you type the word “Liepaja” into a search engine, then most of the 867 thousand pages will be in one way or another related to the “Liepaja diet” developed by Lev Yakovlevich Khazan - one of the simplest and most effective methods of weight loss.

The Latvian authorities, unfortunately, do not seem to be thinking about perpetuating the memory of this truly great man. Maybe because he is not a Latvian, but a Jew (this matters there), and perhaps because he never fit into the system of official medicine, although he managed to gain wide international fame as a recognized specialist in weight loss using the original own method.

According to Lev Khazan’s system, statesmen of the Baltic countries and Kazakhstan, businessmen and athletes, artists and officials, elite prostitutes and diplomats lost weight.

Most likely, the number of those who were treated directly by Lev Khazan is in the thousands, and hundreds of thousands of people in dozens of countries around the world have successfully used his technique, including your humble servant.

I won’t brag about personal achievements (I’m still a pretty big man), but I think that losing weight from 218 to 150-160 kg is a definite success. And this, by the way, allowed me not only to increase my mobility and activity, but also gave me a certain boost of health. In any case, the ailments from which I suffered with my gigantic weight some 7 years ago have disappeared somewhere...

The most interesting thing is that I started losing weight using the Lev Khazan method without even knowing him personally, which proves the possibility of using the method on my own.

Of course, communicating with a specialist makes losing weight much more effective, faster and can save you from a number of mistakes, but with the proper motivation, you can try to lose weight yourself. And having lost 40 kilograms, I went to Liepaja to meet Khazan.

In my articles and the book “Liepaja Diet” I spoke in some detail about my observations and how this method actually works. And, of course, I wanted to talk to a person I liked, Dr. Khazan, once again not only by phone. But I failed to do this.

On August 12, 2015, Lev Yakovlevich Khazan died...

“Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson” – Lev Khazan and Audrius Jozenas, 2014

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Audrius

Most of all, Dr. Khazan reminded me of Sherlock Holmes. Not the modern one played by Benedict Cumberbatch, but our Soviet classic detective played by Vasily Livanov. And from time to time, when we talked with him, it even seemed to me that he was a little copying the hero of Arthur Conan Doyle’s books with his manner of speaking, subtle irony, intelligence and sophistication. I even saw his pipe, in my opinion, although he only smoked cigarettes in front of me.

Lev Yakovlevich was a desperate lover of life: despite his profession as a doctor and the fact that he cured thousands, if not tens of thousands of people, he did not give up bad habits.

Smoking and alcohol were a natural part of the lifestyle to which he was accustomed. He was not in danger of being overweight, so he also loved to gourmet.

When I visited him in 2011, he happily treated me to perfectly cooked lamb (it had to be brought from Riga, since such meat cannot be found in Liepaja), exotic salads and appetizers, several varieties of delicious cheeses and fruits. Cognac at room temperature and ice-cold vodka accompanied this entire non-diet dinner.

This is where the doctor differed from Sherlock Holmes, since he preferred sherry or, at worst, mulled wine. But the overall impression was: yes, Lev Khazan looks like the most outstanding crime fighter. And he, it seems, did not play Sherlock, he most likely felt like a researcher, an analyst, a psychologist, a person who had his own method, but not a deductive one, but a really accessible method of dealing with extra pounds, which in a significant part of the world Shara is known as the “Liepaja diet”.

It saddens me to talk about Dr. Khazan in the past tense. I remember very well how during our second meeting with him in Liepaja, he unexpectedly smiled sadly and said: “You know, Alexey, you need to try to make the most of what you have time in this life. After all, each of us is waiting for a gravestone on which something will be written. On mine it says “Lev Khazan – February 11, 1947,” and the other date is still unknown.”

To be honest, I was surprised by his pessimistic statement, since he looked exceptionally well and there was nothing to indicate that he was ill. He lived after that, as it turned out, less than four years...

And Lev Khazan also had his own Doctor Watson, who, by the way, was completely different from Holmes’s literary colleague. Lev Khazan’s favorite student and best friend, Audrius Jozenas , is the smartest and most charming person who managed to give new impetus to the method of combating excess weight discovered by Lev Khazan and become his true heir. Today, Audrius Jozenas, a citizen of Lithuania, is considered the most “advanced” nutritionist in Kazakhstan, and people from dozens of countries around the world are treated by him, as well as by Khazan.

Audrius Jozenas tried the “Liepaja diet” on himself. Photos "before" and "after"

When I asked Audrius to write something for our readers about his teacher and the last years of his life, he responded immediately.

I quote his letter almost in full: “Alexey, I picked up your book “Liepāja Diet”, signed for me by Lev: “Dear friend, brother! Read and remember your friend, brother, “teacher”!” Lev Khazan.

As you know, we met 10 years ago, when I was about forty, and he was already close to sixty. They say that at that age they no longer become friends. It turns out that they become, and how... At the end of his life he was no longer just one of my friends, but my very best friend, and, as I understand it, it was mutual. In general, Leo had few close friends. He was a difficult person, and it was not always easy to be with him. He firmly defended his opinion, loved to argue, even if he was not always right. I know the story of how he almost quarreled with his friend in America, proving that the harm of smoking is greatly exaggerated. And until the last day he smoked like a locomotive. Over the past few years, we have vacationed a lot together, celebrating New Year's holidays in different countries, on the shores of different oceans. We were in Thailand, Italy, Turkey.

His last New Year, 2015, was also celebrated together in Grand Canaria. I enjoyed every minute of communication with this amazing person. Then I learned that he had had serious health problems for many years and that he carefully hid it even from those closest to him. This includes diabetes, the heart, joints, and much more.

I know that several years ago in Lithuania an ambulance took him straight from a seminar. When I booked a hotel for a vacation, he always asked that it be as close to the sea as possible, and he only asked for excursions where there was no need to walk. At first I couldn’t understand why, but then it turned out that he couldn’t walk more than 20 meters without stopping. But he didn’t even stop like an old man to catch his breath, but simply began to look at some billboard with interest, then again he walked 20 meters - and again there was a billboard.

I think that I was one of the few who knew about it, and he even asked not to tell his wife Ilona about it, he didn’t want her to worry. In public, he was always elegant, defiantly fit with an inimitable smile. When I asked him about something in the field of nutrition and said: “Leva, here it’s probably better to do it this way, but here it’s better to do it like that,” he often answered: “Audrius, maybe you’re right, but I’m already too old “It’s hard for me to change something, so use not only my experience, but think for yourself.” He treated his colleagues and other nutritionists very correctly and tolerantly, even if his opinion did not completely coincide with their point of view, he never spoke badly about them. I remember how once before his seminar, where I flew to gain experience, I began to ask him: “What do you think about this technique, about this nutritionist?” He just smiled and said: “I don’t think anything, the patients will tell about it. And in fact, the seminar began, and the patients began to tell us who had been where, who had tried what, etc.” Until the end of his life, Khazan was an absolute agnostic.

I remember once, lying on the beach, I asked him: “Leva, do you think there is someone up there?” He replied: “There’s no one there, Audrius.” And, despite this, he was very honest and kept the commandments of Christ more than some believers. I always remembered with love my first wife, Lida, who died of a serious illness. He treated his second wife Ilona with tenderness and trepidation, loved to pamper her, and said that she prolongs his life. And, of course, he madly loved life, valued his friends, loved to give gifts and receive them himself...”

Dr. Khazan was killed by fulminant stomach cancer. Audrius Jozenas recalled that back in March 2015, when they had dinner at Arvydas Sabonis’s hotel in Palanga, he felt that something was wrong with Leo. And in June he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and had surgery, cutting out his entire stomach and 60 centimeters of his esophagus. But Khazan continued to work until the end and consult his patients via Skype. Even the best oncologists in the Baltics could no longer help him.

Lev Khazan’s student Leila Mukhamedzhanova, who now works in Karaganda, after the doctor’s death, took over the work with some of his patients, and for free.

By the way, she now officially owns the trademark “Liepaja Diet”, transferred by Lev’s son. And other patients of Hazan continue treatment with Audrius Jozenas...

Lev Khazan was a desperate lover of life. Kazakhstan, 2010

All dietetics consists of myths

Audrius Jozenas, the first and most beloved student of Lev Khazan, is a man who himself went through all the stages of the fight against excess weight, and with one example he could illustrate its effectiveness and efficiency.

And 10-12 years ago he was a fairly large Lithuanian man who had the specialties of a general practitioner and a psychiatrist.

But the 140 kg of weight greatly hampered him, limiting his mobility, narrowing his ability to work effectively and simply live.

The most interesting thing is that, despite his abilities as a psychologist, he could not cope with the problem on his own, and, being in absolute despair, turned to Lev Khazan for help.

Dr. Khazan told me that it is a pleasure to work with people like Audrius, who are dedicated, motivated, and want to fully understand the essence of what is happening to them. In general, Audrius Jozenas lost 50 kg and by the time of our first meeting with him, he weighed 90 kg with a height of 192 cm.

When we had dinner with him in Vilnius, I noticed that the ladies at the neighboring tables were casting interested glances at the charming, handsome Jozenas, so in terms of attractiveness, losing weight clearly benefited him.

The successor of Lev Khazan’s work, Audrius Jozenas: “The Liepāja diet”, also known as the Lev Khazan diet, or (with some author’s modifications) my weight loss technique, is not a diet in the full sense of the word.

There are tens of thousands of different diets, but there are not so many real and effective ones among them. In fact, I am convinced that you can lose weight on almost any diet. But the results of this, both absolute and relative, will be completely different. In most cases, when limiting certain foods or going on a mono-diet, people lose weight, but as soon as they stop the restrictions, their weight returns, and becomes even greater than it was before the diet.

Diets are really only needed for those who are sick, for example, with stomach ulcers, gout or diabetes.

And dividing all food into “right” and “wrong” is a big misconception.

Only the dosage is important.

I often give the example of a hypothetical “carrot” diet. If you eat a kilogram and a half of carrots a day for a month, you will lose weight. But after this, your liver will need to be thoroughly treated, and it is not a fact that modern medicine will be able to help you.

The technique that my teacher Lev Khazan came up with thirty years ago is not only effective, but also publicly available. You just need to understand its principles and not deviate from them, no matter what happens.

The main thing is to change your habits, lifestyle, daily routine and nutrition system. Skipping one or another meal is unacceptable. It is necessary to observe 5-hour intervals between meals - this is exactly the time that is enough for the body to produce the amount of enzymes necessary to assimilate the next portion. The optimal number of meals is 3.

Meal times should be the same every day, +-15 minutes. Having started eating according to our system, within a week or a week and a half you will no longer experience the initial discomfort: you will feel hungry 15 minutes before the set meal time.

Many people say that it is very difficult to overcome the feeling of hunger. There are actually some rules.

If you eat erratically, snacking from time to time, then a slight feeling of hunger will haunt you constantly. It is difficult to deceive the body. He “gets used” to being constantly “fed” and “demands” this more often than is necessary for normal functioning.

Instead of snacks - tea, coffee without sugar or additives - water.

The rest will be perceived by the body as food. I repeat once again that discussions about the benefits of mono-diets have no basis.

The basis of nutrition should be protein foods - cottage cheese, cheese, meat, fish and seafood. Vegetables as a side dish are also necessary.

But the main thing is the amount of food.

Breakfast and dinner are approximately 120 g, lunch - twice as much.

And now a little about the legends and myths of modern dietetics. Let's look at them from a practical, utilitarian point of view.

Myth #1: To lose weight, you need to count calories.

In fact, calorie counting was invented back in the century before last, and was finally “formed” as a system about 100 years ago. I will not dissuade his supporters, but will simply tell you how these calories are calculated.

There is a special oven, which is scientifically called a calorimeter . In it, 100 grams of a particular product are burned and the amount of heat released during the combustion process is calculated.

Tell me honestly, do you look like a stove?

Don't you think that something is actively burning inside you?

The absorption of food is a complex biochemical process that depends on many factors, and the amount of energy that is absorbed by the body is very different from what is written on the product packaging.

Myth No. 2 – vegetarianism, or sharply limiting the consumption of protein foods, is the path to weight loss.

I will give you, dear readers of the newspaper “Top Secret” and those who simply want to lose weight, a couple of examples from the animal world. Remember offhand the largest, as they say, “fat” animals. Elephants, hippos, rhinoceroses... They eat exclusively plant foods. Losing weight?

Let's look at the fish. The main food of carp or sturgeon is algae, and they have plenty of fat. And the meat of predators - pike or perch - is practically without fat at all.

Myth No. 3 – you can’t eat after 6 p.m.

This is a fundamentally incorrect postulate. A person should have breakfast, lunch and dinner. To skip one of the meals means to put the body in an unusual position for it, to which it immediately reacts, firstly, with a feeling of hunger, and secondly, with a “desire” to store extra fat reserves for such an occasion.

For some reason, babies who don’t read glossy magazines and don’t understand the reasoning of nutritionists demand to be fed at night, otherwise they simply won’t let you sleep. It’s nature speaking in them, instincts.

Dinner is a must. My patients who eat dinner at 21-22 pm lose weight exactly the same as those who eat dinner at 18:00.

The main thing is the intervals between meals are 5-6 hours.

Myth No. 4 – in the process of losing weight, you must eliminate all flour products.

The main advantage of bread is that it gives you a feeling of fullness. There is such a concept - the satiety coefficient, and it is the highest for bread.

It is not without reason that during the Second World War, bread was the basis of nutrition in besieged Leningrad.

I have patients who have lost 50 kg and even 100 kg. They were extremely surprised that they were eating more bread than they were used to, and at the same time losing weight. Among other things, bread contains B vitamins and microelements.

Try eating 200 grams of bread and 0.5 kg of strawberries. In what case will your feeling of fullness disappear faster?

Myth #5 – To lose weight, you need to starve.

In fact, therapeutic fasting is a very useful thing. This was proven by both Paul Bragg and the founder of the Soviet school of fasting, Professor Nikolaev. But losing weight while fasting is a side effect. Fasting treats asthma, biliary dyskinesia, and a number of nervous diseases.

But as for the lost weight, it returns with the transition to a normal diet. And comes back with extra pounds. This is called the boomerang or yo-yo effect. The body is a living smart computer, it tries to stock up in case of the next famine. I often cite the example of nutritionists working with sumo wrestlers in Japan. In order for them to gain weight, they are forced to starve for some time, given only water. At first they lose 2–3 kg per day, and then they begin to be fed. Sumo wrestlers very quickly regain what they lost, even 50% more than they lost. That's why I forbid my patients to fast.

Myth No. 6 – diet is a mandatory discomfort for the body.

I call the technique developed by Lev Khazan not a diet, but a way of life, a nutrition system.

As a psychologist, I will tell you that the more comfortable you feel while getting rid of extra pounds, the more stable your emotional state, the faster and easier you will lose weight.

That is why we say that the technique should be comfortable. Food should be tasty, and the process of eating it should be enjoyable. After all, we already have a lot of stress that contributes to overeating. Add to them the stress of not being able to eat (within reasonable limits, of course) some of your favorite dishes, dumplings, for example? For what?

Eat, but only 150 grams, not a whole pack!

Myth No. 7 – exercise is required to lose weight.

I discourage my patients from exercising while losing weight, especially those who haven't exercised in decades. Exercising helps you lose weight and your appetite increases by pounds. I don’t know a single person who, through intense exercise, has lost more than two dozen kilograms. In fact, obesity is a disease that needs to be treated.

Would it occur to you to treat the flu in the gym?

You will be cured, you will undergo a 10-day rehabilitation course (if you remember, in schools after an illness they used to be exempt from physical education for 10 days). And then – play sports as much as you like! I'm not against sports.

Sport is useful when a person has more or less normal health and weight. First you need to lose weight, heal, protect yourself from injury, and then play sports, and not vice versa.

Lev Khazan: excess weight is a shortening of life, your life

Five years ago I asked Dr. Khazan to describe his method and what it could cure.

Here is his answer, almost verbatim: “What I propose is not a diet in the full sense of the word, it is an algorithm for rapid weight loss.

Diets are prescribed for diabetics, ulcer patients, people with pancreatitis, and severe kidney pathology.

Obese people don't need a diet at all! They just need to organize their meals properly. This idea is very important. Only those who are morally, spiritually and financially ready for this need to lose weight. This does not depend on your weight or age.

You just have to catch the moment when your body says: “You can’t live like this anymore!” If you miss it, you may miss life altogether. My oldest lady lost weight (and lost weight) at 82 years old, the youngest patient was five years old. He was not accepted into the figure skating section because of his weight. He lost 5 kg, and the problem was solved.

If we talk about motivation, then we need to remember that obesity is a disease that can have irreparable consequences.

What motivation can there be when treating hypertension?

Firstly, with controlled blood pressure you will live 15-20 years longer. This is already worth a lot.

Secondly, if, God forbid, you saw your grandfather in a state of stroke with bedsores, paralysis, speech impairment, etc., then you will say to yourself: “I don’t want to be like that!”

And try to reduce the risk by treating hypertension...

The main motivation is to improve your health and quality of life.

People collect and spend crazy money on houses, cars, invest it in business, not understanding one thing: if you die, then all these expenses were made in vain. They won’t have any children, dachas, cars, or any of that “there.”

And they can extend their life, and their quality life, here. Here and now!

If they tell you: if you don’t lose 30 kg in six months, you will die, then each of us will lose weight. And without any nutritionists, by the way.

Excess weight means shortening your life. Any insurance company will charge a fat person more money for life insurance than a skinny person. Insurers understand that in this case they have a high probability of paying insurance compensation.

Don't other people understand this? There is nothing more important than a long and high-quality life. When we talk about the specific end of life, all sorts of “jumps” like “a man without 100 kg is not a man!”, “there must be a lot of good people” and so on are lost.

For some reason, we put life expectancy in tenth place, thinking: “When will this happen! During this time I will have time to do something else. And the doctors will come up with something..."

Learn to read numbers, appreciate statistics...

When people have metastatic cancer, they give up everything: work, service, sell houses and apartments, fly somewhere to Finland or Israel to have an operation for any money.

But losing weight in order to live 10–15 years more is a non-specific question for them. Because not now, not today. There are thousands of people who died thin. But the statistics are inexorable.

You see, dear readers, if there is a one in a billion chance of winning a lottery, I will not participate in it. If a bank gives 70% per annum, then I will not put money in this bank, because I know for sure that I will lose it in a year.

An interesting observation: in order to lose weight, a person needs to have an increased level of intelligence. He must be able to read and listen, comprehend what he read, be able to analyze and think.

And, of course, the most successful weight loss occurs only in contact with a doctor. It’s not just to determine the portion size, but also to help avoid mistakes, support in difficult times, reassure, help, explain - that’s my task. When I communicate with patients eye to eye, even on Skype, I can really help. In other cases, unfortunately, no one can give a guarantee.

“Liepaja diet” is just a method...”

The effectiveness of the Liepāja diet

In the first month, approximately 1/3 of the excess weight will be lost. At the second stage, weight loss will be 60-70% of your goals. At the end of the third month, the remaining 30-40% of excess weight will be gone. The plateau effect often occurs in the second stage, when the body tries to adapt to changes in body weight. Anyone losing weight needs to understand that there is nothing wrong with this. We must continue to adhere to the Liepāja diet. After about a week of plateauing, weight loss will continue.

Dr. Khazan's system has a beneficial effect on the general condition of the body. Thanks to a balanced diet, the gastrointestinal tract begins to work better, and food saturation occurs faster. Due to a calorie deficit, fat reserves begin to be used up. The speed of weight loss varies from person to person. Some people lose up to 25 kg per cycle, while others lose 8-9 kg. The minimum amount of weight that can be lost thanks to this weight loss system is 5 kg.

Opinion of nutritionists

Having become familiar with the nutritional method developed by Khazan, many doctors question its benefits and effectiveness. Meat salads, fried meat and sandwiches are not dietary foods, but people accustomed to a traditional diet still lose weight when eating them. The main skepticism is caused by breaks between meals. Nutritionists believe that 5 hours is too long and suggest reducing it to 3 hours.

History of the diet

The author of the method, Lev Yakovlevich Khazan, is a practicing nutritionist and graduate of the University of Tartu. Having worked as an endocrinologist in the Baltic city of Liepaja for a decade and a half, he created a unique dietary regimen designed for weight correction, and in 1986 he opened his own clinic in Riga. The effectiveness of the technique, named after the Latvian city, was so great that soon people began to come to Dr. Khazan from all over the country to treat obesity.

The popularizer of Khazan’s technique in Russia was one of his first patients, Russian journalist Alexey Bogomolov. Over three years of following the dietary regime, the weight of the obese Bogomolov decreased from 218 kg to 148 kg. The correspondent found the author of a uniquely effective nutrition system, who never sought to communicate with the press. The result of this meeting was a book written by Alexei Bogomolov about the Liepaja diet.

Sometimes the author or co-author of the technique is called Audrius Jozenas. In fact, this Latvian psychiatrist was also one of Lev Khazan’s patients, who lost 50 kg on a diet. Having personally tried the weight loss system and its impact on the psychological sphere, Yozenas supplemented the author’s recommendations with a number of activities. Currently, Dr. Jozenas practices in Kazakhstan, helping people lose weight using the Liepāja diet.

Weight loss records using the Khazanah system

In one of Lev Yakovlevich Khazan’s interviews, record numbers of weight loss results on the Liepaja diet were mentioned. The winner among women was a resident of Moscow; as a result of following several cycles of a diet regimen, she managed to lose 113 kg of weight; in the men's category, the palm belongs to a 40-year-old Siberian who lost 123 kg.

How to consolidate the result

The Liepaja diet is not suitable for constant nutrition. When you reach the desired weight, you need to return to your usual menu. Once a week you should have a fasting: vegetable, kefir, fruit and berry. It is important to carry out a six-month stabilization of body weight. During the specified time, weight fluctuations should not exceed 700 grams. To maintain a slim figure and consolidate the results obtained, you must:

  • Eat food at the same time.
  • Do not snack between meals.
  • For the first 2 weeks after returning to your usual diet, maintain the “diet” portion size.
  • Have 1 fasting day every week.
  • If you overeat heavily during a holiday feast, you should fast the next day. This will help the stomach return to its small size.
  • If your weight increases by 700 grams, you need to return to the diet followed in the first month.

What's on the menu?

The list of ways to diversify food on the Liepaja diet is quite diverse and does not have strict restrictions on the main nutrients. Protein is consumed more than other components of the diet. List of what can be used when creating a menu:

  1. Various vegetables whose fiber stimulates a high level of metabolism. These can be: cabbage, zucchini, broccoli, asparagus, eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, root vegetables, pumpkin, onions, dill, parsley.
  2. Apples can be included in your diet as a fruit.
  3. A small amount of grain bread is allowed.
  4. Dairy nutrition on the Liepaja diet includes milk and all types of low-fat fermented milk products.
  5. Nuts supply the body with healthy fats. Any type is allowed, but in limited quantities.
  6. It can be any kind of meat, but preferably low in fat.
  7. The sausage is limited to the classic doctorate.
  8. Chicken eggs can be prepared in any way. No more than 2 pieces per day are allowed.
  9. You can use different seasonings and sauces to suit your taste, but in small quantities.
  10. Butter and different types of vegetable oil can be used for cooking and salad dressing.
  11. Seafood includes any type with reduced fat content, as well as canned food in its own juice.
  12. Honey is allowed on a fasting day.
  13. Natural juices without salt and sugar, mineral water.

Drinks such as coffee, tea, juices can be drunk as much as you want, but under one condition - the absence of any additives in the form of sugar, milk, cream, lemon. It is necessary to alternate meat and fish dishes, as well as sandwiches with butter and sausage.

Advantages and disadvantages

The Liepaja diet is admired by people who for a long time could not part with extra pounds and got into shape only with its help, but not everything is so rosy. This weight loss system has its pros and cons that need to be studied before changing your diet. For example, it should not be used by people suffering from high blood pressure or actively involved in sports. Distinctive features of the Liepaja diet:

pros Minuses
The diet includes fiber, meat, and fish. Thanks to these products, the likelihood of protein imbalance and intestinal problems is minimal. Unbalanced. It is not advisable for athletes and people leading an active lifestyle to adhere to this diet, because... The diet contains a lot of fats and proteins, and carbohydrates are almost completely excluded. With intense physical activity, cortisol levels will begin to rise, which will lead to the breakdown of muscle mass, ketosis, constant fatigue and metabolic disorders.
Duration. In 3 months, the body manages to completely adapt to a new diet. You must strictly follow the recommendations. You cannot increase the amount of food consumed.
Easily tolerated by those losing weight, because... does not require a drastic change in eating habits and complete abandonment of familiar foods.
A person gradually gets used to eating at the same time, which in the future helps to adhere to a healthy diet. It is unacceptable to add third-party products to the menu.
Breakfast and lunch can be varied by adding foods containing a high percentage of protein.

The calorie content of the food is very low, which is not suitable for all people. The daily calorie intake can be calculated using the Muffin-Geor formula: (10*weight in kg) + (6.25*height in cm) - (5*age in years). Men need to add 5 to the resulting figure, and women need to subtract 161. For example, a 19-year-old student with a height of 168 cm and a weight of 55 kg should consume 1344 kcal per day. This is the basic amount of calories needed to maintain the body. A person losing weight should calculate the caloric content of food based on the desired weight.

Advantages and disadvantages

prosMinuses
  • Contains fish and meat protein, fiber.
  • Quite a long period of time and during this time the body and metabolism are rebuilt to new eating habits.
  • Relatively easy to carry.
  • The habit of following a diet is formed, which subsequently has a positive effect on health.
  • You can diversify your breakfast and lunch with different protein products, depending on your own preferences.
  • Not balanced - the amount of fats, proteins is significantly reduced and there are no carbohydrates. You should not eat fruits in the first month, and in very limited quantities in subsequent months. of vitamins and minerals is mandatory .
  • Requires strict adherence; you cannot increase the amount of food you eat.
  • The menu cannot be supplemented with anything, and dinner cannot be changed.
  • The monotony of food, especially at dinner, so you soon get bored.
  • A low content of kilocalories is acceptable for the female body, but not for the male one.

Side effects and contraindications

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the Khazanah diet is prohibited. A sharp decrease in the number of kilocalories consumed will lead to disruption of lactation. One of the main side effects of this system is a sharp decrease in the amount of sugar in the blood. Some people who lose weight experience arrhythmia and low blood pressure. If such symptoms occur, it is necessary to increase the caloric content of food, returning familiar foods to the diet. If the feeling of weakness and fatigue does not go away, you should visit a doctor. The Liepaja weight loss program is contraindicated:

  • If you have high blood pressure, high levels of bad cholesterol and cardiovascular diseases. This is due to the fact that people following the Liepāja diet have to consume a lot of animal fats.
  • During heavy physical activity. Professional athletes cannot use this weight loss program to dry their bodies, because... the balance of proteins, fats and carbohydrates is not designed for active muscle work.
  • For gastric ulcers and kidney diseases.
  • If you have type 2 diabetes mellitus. The menu contains a lot of fruits and fruit juices, which can disrupt the metabolism of patients. In mild cases of the disease, you can adhere to a dietary diet with the permission of your doctor.

Opinion of nutritionists

The diet of the Liepaev diet can hardly be called balanced. The correct menu should contain the required amount of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates should absolutely not be consumed while following this diet. Butter, bread, meat are products that are incompatible with each other and take a long time to digest, which leads to fermentation in the intestines, so the breakfast options proposed by the diet are fundamentally incorrect. Combining incompatible foods can cause poisoning of the body, development of fatigue, apathy, depression... not the best diet companions, right?

Do you remember the moment when Dr. Khazan offers additional services after completing the basic course? Isn't this questionable? If the technique really worked, the specialist would certainly be in a hurry to distribute it among people absolutely free of charge. But it turns out that a person starts using a low-calorie program, loses some kilograms and, believing in the effectiveness of the diet, rushes to the doctor for an individual nutrition plan. Not a bad idea!

You need to choose a weight loss method that you can follow for the rest of your life. But it’s unlikely that anyone will be able to eat either sandwiches or eggs every morning. Don't waste precious time and health, get your body in shape using proven methods. Stop believing the authors of various methods or the creators of magic pills. Better engage in proper nutrition, exercise and health maintenance. The psychological aspect is also important.

Useful tips

Dr. Lev Khazan first put the diet into practice in 1986. The doctor tried not only to achieve permanent weight loss. For a diet to work en masse, it must become comfortable, cheap and fast-acting. The results of the diet are so impressive that after a year those who wanted to lose weight were already going to his house with their problem.

The diet developed by the doctor is designed for weight loss in a short time. In 3–4 months a person loses 40–45 kg, excess weight. The maximum weight loss results per year are 123 kg for men and 113 kg for women.

The advice that Lev Khazan gives to those losing weight on nutrition is not surprising. Do not consume sugar, ethyl alcohol, or excess food. The main thing is not to change weight, but to change habits. The reasons for the mass obesity of people is that food is the cheapest of pleasures. Just a few decades ago, food was obtained; there was no ready-made food for sale. We are now reaping the results of fast food. Lev Khazan became the first private doctor in Latvia and over the years of work gained fame in the territory of the former Union and in Europe. This confirms the outstanding results that the diet demonstrates.

Lev Khazan revealed the secret of the first part of the diet, designed for 2 months. In the next 3-4 months of the diet, changes will occur in the menu, which only the doctor knows. Therefore, those who want to lose weight under the guidance of an experienced doctor should contact him directly. Skype email: hazanlev.
