“The Black Swan Diet”, “How to sculpt Natalie Portman’s body in “Black Swan””... It’s incredible how quickly such headlines flashed in the glossy after the release of Darren Aronofsky’s horror film about a gentle, beautiful ballerina who is tormented by an obsession with perfection.
Portman's heroine, ballerina Nina, suffers from anorexia, eats only grapefruit for breakfast and is terrified of sweets. He works all day long. She dreams so much of dancing the lead role in Swan Lake perfectly that she begins to hallucinate: as if black wings are appearing on her, and her toes are fused into webbed swan feet.
For this role, the actress, who is 160 cm tall, lost weight from 52 kg to 43 kg. She had to cut down portions to microscopic sizes and work hard at the ballet barre for the entire year of filming from morning to evening. “Black Swan” came at a cost to her. Natalie, according to her, almost lost her mind from physical and moral exhaustion, and does not advise anyone to repeat her dangerous acting experiment.
Late. Portman looks mesmerizing in a tutu, and it’s almost impossible to resist her look. You immediately want to have the same slender legs and swan neck: according to statistics, for 70% of teenage girls, screen beauties are an ideal for which it is worth making any sacrifices.
In fact, you won’t envy either Nina or Portman herself. “In real life, we were disgusting, skin and bones,” recalls actress Mila Kunis, who also had to starve herself and lose weight to 43 kg to play Portman’s rival. “But on the screen and in photographs they looked like ethereal beauties.”
The line between healthy and unhealthy perfectionism is so thin that even many adult viewers did not see it. A quote from ballet soloist Inna Grinkevich scared me more than all of Aronofsky’s special effects. “This film is worthy of an Oscar - it celebrates professionalism and dedication,” she said in an interview with Starhit magazine. “It’s better to shine once than to spend your whole life in the corps de ballet.” To my 14-year-old daughter Anita, who is studying at the ballet school, I say this: either you leave altogether, or you will be the first - you will dance the title roles on the best stages in the world.” Listen, but this is the ready-made future Nina and her mother!
Psychologists believe that it is their parents who are often to blame for children’s pathological perfectionism. “This is an insidious psychological phenomenon because it is mixed with the most respected attitudes in society,” explains psychodrama therapist Olga Prokhorova. - “My daughter should be first in everything”, “Four is not a mark” - many of us have heard this from our parents. And most often, behind the idea of winning and standing out is the desire to be liked and to receive parental approval. Another danger in the pursuit of the ideal is that it erases the differences between people. “It’s not what I am that becomes valuable, but what I should be,” says psychologist Svetlana Prokopyuk. “The fulcrum for a perfectionist is the assessment of others, not one’s own.”
In fact, despite the apparent similarity, the stories of Portman and her heroine are completely different. Portman herself believes that the “either the first or no one” attitude cripples the soul and does not contribute to her career at all. She passed the test of perfectionism while working on “Black Swan” precisely because she excluded competition for herself.
“When I was younger, I always felt that I could be replaced,” she said in an interview with Russian Reporter. “And now I understand that I can do things that none of my colleagues can do, and, conversely, I cannot do what they can do... For the sake of perfection, many are ready to do anything, including self-destruction. But perfection is just a moment, you can be perfect for only a few seconds... Therefore - no! I believe that we do not have to suffer in order to create.”
As soon as filming ended, Natalie returned to a normal diet and stopped training: “On the first day after filming, I attacked pasta and couldn’t stop. I thought, if only they wouldn’t force me to reshoot something, I won’t fit into the costumes!”
It turns out that for mental health it is important to know exactly what is driving you - a pathological desire for success or a desire to do something really well. That is why, unlike her heroine Nina, Portman did not go crazy and kill herself, but received an Oscar and joyfully began to eat pasta.
