27-year-old Kia Twisselman began her struggle with excess weight in October 2021, when the scales showed 130 kilograms. And she proved by her example that the best results are achieved not through tricky diets and strict food restrictions, but through self-love and patience.

It all started when Kia read Rachel Hollis' bestselling motivational book, Wake Up, Baby! Stop believing lies about who you are so you can become who you are meant to be.” And I decided to follow Hollis's plan, outlined in the book, which consisted of following five simple habits: wake up an hour earlier, move actively for at least 30 minutes a day, drink a lot of water (half your body weight in ounces), keep a weight loss journal, switch to intuitive eating. Kia started doing all this in October 2021, and by January 2019 she managed to lose 10 kg. The result has inspired her to set her sights on a bigger goal - losing another 45kg by October. And everything worked out, and even better than she expected, because by the fall she lost not 45, but 55 kilograms.

The story of how I lost weight without dieting

I've never been fat. As a child, weight category issues didn’t bother me at all (and shouldn’t have!). My parents had good intentions, but no one ever emphasized healthy eating. Soda, snacks, quick snacks - all this was part of my diet. As a teenager, I considered myself fat (a truth that every other teenage girl believes in at that age!). Of course, this was not the case. I thought that I was a little dense, but this thought never became obsessive.

Now, looking back, I understand that it all started in high school. Too much stress, life changes, fast food and lack of exercise took their toll: I started gaining weight. I was already convinced that “I’m fat,” so I just told myself: “this is me, and I have to accept it.” I got married young, had my first child when I was 20, and of course, added a few extra pounds. Divorce, remarriage and two more children—my weight class grew.

Amanda: BEFORE

But I've never been too concerned about weight issues. I've never even stepped on the scale. I was weighed only when I had a preventative appointment with the doctor once a year, but even then I did not see this as a tragedy. This is me and I have to accept it...

XX century

The events that took place during this time completely changed man's worldview. Over the course of a century, many revolutions and wars have passed, feminism has emerged, and science and technology have begun to actively develop.

All this directly affected the perception of beauty. Now girls could easily wear trousers and short skirts without forcing themselves into certain limits. Hair, makeup and wardrobe have become means of self-expression.

The ideals of beauty here were very changeable. For example, in the 60s, excessive thinness was popular, 20 years later - an athletic physique, and in the 1990s, a standard figure with parameters 90-60-90 appeared.

How to lose extra pounds at home

Most doctors have come to the conclusion that older people should strive to lose excess weight, since obesity aggravates chronic diseases, disrupts the functioning of internal organs, and also causes new diseases. However, when addressing the topic of diet, older people should be careful and regularly consult with their doctor so as not to worsen their well-being or harm their health. The safest option remains hospital treatment, but not every person can afford it.

If it is not possible to seek help from specialists, you can lose weight at home, adhering to the basic rules. The key recommendation is to lose weight gradually, without strict dietary restrictions or excessive physical activity. Prolonged fasting days lasting more than two days, fasting, and express diets will only harm an elderly person. Strong restrictions contribute to sudden weight loss, often more than 2-3 kg per month, which is a lot of stress. Maintaining such a lifestyle leads to a nervous breakdown, metabolic disorders and other processes in the body. This is the only way to lose excess weight without gaining new weight after dieting.

Baroque (XVII–XVIII centuries)

At this time, fashion magazines began to be published, which shared new trends with girls. In those years, corsets became especially popular, making the waists of beauties incredibly narrow.

As in the previous era, porcelain leather was valued. The girls achieved it in the same ways as their ancestors. But innovations did appear during the Baroque: all the beauties decorated their faces with colored paper in the form of stars, flowers or hearts. The girls did this to hide their skin problems.

What recommendations should be followed to properly lose weight for an elderly person?

People over forty need to make great efforts to lose extra pounds and achieve good physical shape. After sixty years of age, the situation becomes even more complicated, since metabolic processes in the body slow down, and health does not allow for an active lifestyle. To get results in this case, you just have to resort to the right diet.

When creating a diet, you first need to add plant foods, foods rich in complex carbohydrates (cereals), protein (meat or fish), low-fat dairy products and some animal fats. Let's look at the recommended diet in more detail:

  1. Complex carbohydrates.
Unlike fast carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates are digested more slowly, are more satiating, and provide energy. Foods rich in fiber have a positive effect on the digestive tract, clearing it of toxins. They are also necessary if a person suffers from constipation. Elderly people should add wholemeal bread, unpolished rice, durum wheat pasta, and porridge cooked in water to their diet. It is better not to consume fast carbohydrates, which are found mainly in sweets and baked goods. They are always deposited as fat in problem areas.
  2. Vegetables. Since the body absorbs vitamins less well with age, it is recommended to regularly increase their intake. This will help eliminate the deficiency of useful macro- and microelements. Regular consumption of vegetables will ensure good functioning of the cardiovascular and immune systems. Vegetables are also rich in fiber, which improves gut health and stimulates fat burning. To maintain the vitamin complex in the body at the required level, all vegetables are suitable - cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, spinach.
  3. Dairy products. Elderly people feel a lack of calcium in the body more acutely. Considering that the substance is regularly removed from the blood, the supply must be constantly replenished so that the bones and joints do not weaken. If the level of calcium in the body of an elderly person is low, they need to be replenished as quickly as possible. Fermented milk products rich in easily digestible calcium, bifidobacteria and lactobacilli are suitable for this. In moderation, you can consume kefir, probiotic starter, unsweetened yogurt or low-fat cottage cheese.
  4. Squirrels. Protein products are necessary for every person, as they form muscle mass. Since older people lose muscle tissue as they age, it is important for them to make up for this deficiency. Protein foods should be regularly present in the diet, but their excess puts a serious strain on the kidneys. Therefore, despite the benefits of proteins, their quantity will always have to be controlled. You can cook lean veal, lean turkey, chicken, low-fat white fish, as well as other seafood.
  5. Fats. Many people believe that reducing fat in their daily diet to a minimum will help them lose weight. This is not true because healthy fats play an important role in the human body. Without them, the production of growth hormone and puberty in young people is impossible. The elderly also need them, only in smaller quantities. Since the functioning of the pancreas and liver changes with age, it is more difficult for the body to break down fats, especially of animal origin. Due to their excess, cholesterol accumulates in the vessels, which can lead to stroke or death. Therefore, the recommendation is repeated here - useful, but in moderation. You can add vegetable oil, flax seeds, walnuts, avocado or red fish, rich in unsaturated acids, to your diet.

Minus 60 kg in 9 months with proper nutrition. Photos before and after weight loss

Imagine that for 18 months you eat exclusively fast food, drink 1.5 liters of cola a day and raid the refrigerator at night because you cannot sleep without a portion of ice cream or chocolate. You are terribly afraid to look at yourself in the mirror, but at the same time you continue to eat stress and believe that the excess weight will disappear by itself...

This is the true story of 48-year-old Katerina Vasiliadis from Sydney, who, with a height of almost 155 cm, began to weigh 138.5 kg. Extremely high weight, which can lead to serious health problems, appeared as a result of a woman’s uncontrolled overeating.

“During any ups and downs, I always sought solace in food - it was the only source of psychological comfort for me,” says Katerina Vassiliadis. — I started my day with a large cappuccino, sweetened with four tablespoons of sugar. A little later, I bought a second coffee, which also had sugar, but it already came with a “snack” in the form of cookies with chocolate chips and white chocolate icing. Lunch might consist of deep-fried fish fingers with French fries and cola. Dinner also consisted of ready-made takeaway meals - pizza, burgers, and at night I could easily eat a large bar of chocolate or a pack of XXL size chips. When I think about the fact that my husband and I spent about $250 a week for 1.5 years on junk food and fast food, I feel terribly embarrassed.”

At a time when her steadily increasing weight became increasingly uncontrollable, Katerina Vasiliadis sought medical help. The only possible solution, according to her attending physician, was sleeve gastroplasty - an operation to reduce the size of the stomach. However, the woman considered this option unsuitable, despite the fact that obesity threatened her with multiple illnesses and even premature death.

“I couldn’t afford to spend $22,000 on surgery, I just didn’t have that kind of money. I was also afraid of dying right on the operating table,” explains Katerina Vassiliadis. “However, my problem had to be solved somehow; I couldn’t cope at all on my own.”

“I was able to realize the seriousness of the situation only when I was about to fly to Melbourne to meet my sister. Not only did I barely squeeze into the seat on the plane, but the damned seat belt was too small for me: I had to ask the flight attendant for a special extension. You should have seen how the other passengers looked at me... It was so humiliating.”

In March 2021, when the weight reached 138.5 kg, Katerina Vassiliadis was ready to give up. Finally, recognizing that she needed help, she turned to her best friend, who was able to lose weight with the help of specialists and a weight loss program based on completely eliminating unhealthy refined foods and sugar.

“As luck would have it, one of the first tasks of the weight loss program was to take a selfie in underwear in front of the mirror. “I stopped looking at my reflection a long time ago, so as not to get upset again and not feel remorse,” says Katerina Vassiliadis. “And, despite the burning desire to change, I was afraid to face reality. When I finally took a photo of myself in just my panties and bra, I was heartbroken. It was terrible to see what I really looked like."

Following all the recommendations of specialists and strictly following the nutrition plan, during the first 40 days, program participants were supposed to lose 10-15 kg. Katerina Vassiliadis managed to get rid of 16 kg.

“This success was enough to spur me on and continue in the same spirit,” notes Katerina Vassiliadis. “After seven months, I not only lost 60 kg, but also stopped taking painkillers that I had to take because of joint pain. The most joyful thing was updating my entire wardrobe: before I wore clothes in size 6XL, now I wear M. And this is all thanks to proper nutrition and the support of loved ones. It was difficult, but it was definitely worth it!”

How to lose weight for older women with diabetes

Obesity is always perceived more sharply by women, since excess weight greatly affects one's appearance. Such changes reduce self-esteem, lead to depression, or push you to start losing weight. For people suffering from diabetes, there is only one non-drug option to reduce the concentration of insulin in the body - remove fast carbohydrates from the daily diet. This will normalize the fat processing process, which will allow you to remove extra pounds. This method is painless because it does not require strict diets or intensive training in the gym. Low-fat or low-calorie diets will not work for diabetics because such diets do not affect blood insulin levels.

American physician Robert Atkinson developed a low-carbohydrate diet in 1970, which is described in detail in his book “Atkinson's New Revolutionary Diet,” which has sold more than ten million copies. The popularity of the new nutrition program was due to its effectiveness. The book, translated into Russian, gives several tips that will help you lose extra pounds. Following the recommendations reduces the risk of diabetes in older people.

Older women who live with diabetes are overweight. The reason for this lies in the improper functioning of insulin. If in a healthy person it reduces the level of glucose in the blood and controls its absorption, then in a patient it functions differently. During illness, insulin resistance appears (high levels of insulin in the blood), and the metabolic reaction of cells is disrupted. This leads to the fact that glucose is not processed and accumulates. High levels of insulin in the blood increase the synthesis of protein and fat, and also act as an inhibitor of enzymes, which is why fat deposits accumulate.

A diagnosis of diabetes is not a death sentence for older women who want to lose weight. It will complicate and delay the process, but you can achieve results by following a diet. A diet that reduces the amount of insulin in the blood has a long-term effect, so the weight will come off slowly at first. You can help your body shed extra pounds through physical education and regular adequate exercise.
